Our Honeymoon: Paris

We started our honeymoon off in Paris, one of my favorite cities in the world.

I studied abroad in Paris when I was in college and this was my first trip back. Last winter, when Adam and I started planning our honeymoon out and brainstorming of where we wanted to go, I immediately shouted out PARIS! We had to go to Paris. It was a given. Paris was where I fell in love with food and where decided to make a career out of my passion. I’m obsessed with the French culture, the way of life there that involves all the sweet little pastry shops, markets and fresh flowers. There’s a spark, a bit of magic, that you feel when you stand on the bridge overlooking the Seine and the gaping steeples of the Notre Dame. I know it’s just a city and it has it’s share of issues, but for me there will always be that spark.

Instead of going the hotel route, we rented a tiny flatduring our stay and couldn’t have been happier. Traveling is both Adam and my biggest passion and when we travel, we like to “be local” as much as possible. For us that means steering clear of big corporate hotel chains, walking everywhere {or learning that city’s means of public transportation} and finding out the fabulous hole-in-the-wall restaurants. We aren’t big into touristy things and would rather dig in to local culture. That’s why it worked out so well for us to rent a flat!

Here’s the inside of our flat! It was tiny but perfect for us and was in a wonderful area on the left bank close to many bistros and cafes and about 15 minutes walking distance from the Eiffel Tower.

The bedspread was covered in hearts! Adorable. This flat had previously been a bakery in the early 20th century. How fitting, right? If you’re interested, you can find the listing to “The Boulangerie Room” here. I really can’t recommend it enough and the owner was incredibly nice. He took Adam and I on a stroll around the neighborhood right when we arrived to show us all his favorite places.

We spent five glorious nights in Paris. One of the days we slept until 12:30 in the afternoon! If you know me or have been reading this blog for any length of time, you know I NEVER sleep in…but it felt wonderful to just relax and catch up on all the sleep we missed during the wedding and on our long flight. It rained pretty much every day we were there, but we didn’t care. We just buttoned up our rain jackets, grabbed the umbrella that Christopher {the owner of the flat} left for us, and headed out to explore.

We stuffed ourselves absolutely silly with chocolate croissants, tarte tatin, ham & cheese crepes and flourless chocolate cake. Every single day we ate dessert after lunch AND dinner. It was fabulous. A typical mid-day snack was hot goat cheese toast and rose wine….or gelato, which I ate daily on the trip. I think that covers all nutritional bases, right?

While in Paris, I also became obsessed with the vending machines in the metro stations. I mean, they are really the cutest! Filled with European chocolates and Haribo gummie bears.

And the fresh flowers! They were everywhere, despite the cold rain.

We spent one afternoon exploring the Jarden des Plantes, which was in my old neighborhood, and then when it started to rain again, we took shelter sipping hot, sweet mint tea and nibbling on crunchy pastries at the Paris Mosque.

Another day was spent walking along the Seine and through the winding streets of Ile St-Louis. We ate dinner at my favorite restaurant in Paris that night, Il Caveau. If you’re ever in Paris, please do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a meal here. It’s actually quite affordable, as far as Paris goes. I believe dinner that night for the two of us cost only 60 euros, and that included wine and dessert.

When you’re there, start with a steaming bowl of French onion soup and then order the salmon with rice instead of vegetables for your entree. The sauce with the salmon is life changing, full of garlic and other magical things. Definitely get the soft chocolate cake for dessert, which is sort of like a chocolate lava cake, but served with thick, rich creme anglaise for dipping. Then, let’s chat.

On our last evening in Paris, the rain finally stopped. We took that as an opportunity to stock up on truffle salami {from our neighborhood charcuterie}, stinky cheese, French bread and macarons from La Grand Epicerie and head to the Eiffel Tower to have a picnic. The ground was still wet, so my husband went out and bought us a cheap blue blanket from Monoprix to spread underneath us and we cracked a bottle of Pinot Noir, made sandwich after sandwich, and feasted happily.

I have still have so much I could tell you about, like the ice cream sundae from Laduree, the falafel sandwich the size of my face from L’as du Fallafel in the Marais {we waited in line outside in the cold rain for half an hour to get that sandwich and let me tell you, it did not disappoint}, the countless cones of gelato from Amorino and dry, fizzy champagne we sipped out of paper cups in our flat, while our shoes dried out from the rain. Of course we had a dud day that involved walking in circles for hours, but that’s not relevant.

We left Paris early in the morning, dragging our sixty pound suitcase down the Metro steps as we made our way to the train station. The next part of our adventure to come!

**Regularly scheduled recipe posts will resume shortly. Thank you for understanding + having patience as we unpack, settle in and start our lives together!

Spent 10 days in Paris in April to participate in the marathon and explore the city. It was fabulous. As I had never been before I spent a fair amount of my time seeing everything I possibly could and not enough time exploring the food of the city.

Those are some gorgeous pictures, and I love that you rented a flat instead of staying in an apartment! I keep getting confused, though, about when it was that you were in Paris before. I thought it was for a 6-week course of some sort after college, not a study abroad stint in college? I can’t believe you’ve never been back! Once I caught the travel bug I couldn’t shake it. Then again, I have always lived in the northeast, which makes for a relatively inexpensive and quick hop across the pond.

    • Liz
      June 16, 2013 at 5:03 pm

P.S. The vending machine appears to be filled with Mounds, M&Ms, and Snickers. 🙂 (And other European brands, I know….) Actually I have specifically noted that the Snickers in Paris seem smallers and heavier on the peanuts (yum) than they are here.

      • Aubrey
        June 17, 2013 at 4:54 am

Actually, the Mars company that makes M&Ms and Snickers has historically run its chocolate business between both the U.S. and the U.K., so the Mars bar could technically be considered European! And the recipes for the candy globally are a bit different based on the tastes of the country they are in. 🙂 Chances are, that candy is made in Europe.

        • Liz
          June 17, 2013 at 1:42 pm

I’m actually aware of that, and Nestle is also European, but let’s face it – mass-produced/mass-marketed candy bars aren’t exactly what people think of when they think “European chocolates.” And although the recipe varies a bit from place to place (not just for tastes but for accepted/available ingredients) those candy bars are still largely what you can get in any drug store in the US. (I’ve been to Europe more than 10 times, with 6 visits to Paris.)

I LOVE Paris! It looks like you two had an amazing honeymoon together and made the best of every situation. You’re making me want to go back there like, tomorrow. It’s such a magical place. And you’re flat was adorable, it’s actually bigger than the hotel room I stayed in while I was there. That’s too cool that it used to be a bakery-so fitting for you. Can’t wait to read more of your time there!

      • Lindsay
        June 17, 2013 at 10:34 am

Hate to rain on your (sponsored) honeymoon parade, but you need to disclose the source of any gifts you receive in exchange for a review. And as a reader, I would appreciate it if you made it conspicuous instead of hidden in a post that required your reader to infer the sponsorship!

        • Suzanne de Cornelia
          June 17, 2013 at 1:06 pm

It wasn’t hidden, it was right below the post where it belongs.

          • Marie
            June 18, 2013 at 4:09 pm

Suzanne, you need to read up. It doesn’t “belong” in the bottom of the post:
Although the 2000 guidelines defined proximity as “near, and when possible, on the same screen,” and stated that advertisers should “draw attention to” disclosures, the new guidance says disclosures should be “as close as possible” to the relevant claim. http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2013/03/dotcom.shtm

For what it’s worth, I think the way she mentioned the offer within the content of the post is a more honest and sincere way of disclosing sponsored content rather than ONLY putting it at the bottom of the page.

And last, lest anyone accuse me of raining on her parade, I’m simply trying to offer the FACTS and also defend a few of the commenters here who are getting ripped apart just for saying they felt a little duped…or should no one get a say but you?

        • Sarah
          June 17, 2013 at 1:16 pm

Was this part “The company contacted us almost a year ago in regards to reviewing one of their thousands of properties worldwide and naturally, we saved that once in a lifetime opportunity for our honeymoon!” confusing to you, Lindsay? She made it clear. We would appreciate it if you let her enjoy that parade.

          June 19, 2013 at 7:20 am

I can’t believe people can’t just be happy for Jenna. Weddings and honeymoons can get pricey. So what if they were offered a sponsored flat in Paris? Awesome for them!

Get over yourselves and stop being so judgmental. That can’t be a very enjoyable way to live.

Oh this is such a lovely post – gorgeous photos! We tend to travel as local as we can. My husband travels often for work so we use points for hotel rooms to save some money, but 90% of the time that we travel, we try to figure out the local public transportation or walk a lot. We went to Boston in 2010 and walked 8 miles our first day there! I love getting to know the area where we travel, to walk around and explore the cities!

For some reason, traveling doesn’t top my list of favorite activities, but your post makes me want to go {back} to Paris! Would it be silly to fly there for the falafel alone? 😉

Oh, I am so glad you posted this, thank you!
Sounds like you had an amazing honeymoon.

I am visiting my friend in London in September, and we are spending 2 days in Paris – I just emailed her this link so we can try and check out as many of these places as we can!
    YUM!!
    Thank you!

Yes! I apologize I am a little slow on my email right now. We actually just had a friend pass away this morning and we are headed down south to be with the family. I promise I’ll catch up next week.

I love this post!!!! I have fallen completely in love with this city during my time here abroad, I can’t believe I have to leave next week 🙁

I’m all about the champagne, goat cheese toasts, chocolate and almond croissants, baguettes, and I had my first amorino flower gelato cone the other day by the L’Organgerie, AMAZING!

    Jenna,

It’s so interesting to see your trip to Paris as I’m finishing my year abroad here as well, and it’s amusing because you talk about staying “local” but quite a few of your pictures – such as Les Deux Magots, or the Eiffel Tower, are not very local at all! Haha, it’s totally okay to do “touristy things” while you are traveling! Even after a year here, I still lose my breath when I see the Eiffel Tower, but it still remains a very touristy image of Paris, and there is so much more stuff to see here ! Next time 🙂

What a lovely post! My sister and I are going to Paris at the end of July, so this was great to read. She is a huge foodie, so I’m sure she’ll be in heaven (right now she’s making a list of all the pastry shops she wants to try!)

Can you give us more info on the Il Caveau restaurant? Where is it? I can’t seem to find it on Google 🙁

I’m truly happy for you. I would not choose a Paris for my honeymoon (even though it is one of my “must visit” places), but if that’s your place, that’s great.

Hi Jenna! I’m headed to Paris in 3 weeks (yay!) and was thinking of doing my birthday dinner at Il Caveau. I can’t seem to find it online – can you let me know where it’s located? merci!

I too spent a semester abroad in France, although I lived in Pontlevoy only 2 hours by TGV in the Loire valley. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post about your honeymoon in Paris. I would love to go back and see some of my favorite sites. Have you seen the Sabrina 1995 movie? It has set partially in Paris and I love to see it when I want to reminise. I’m so glad I found your blog! I can’t wait to read more.

    hi there!
i’m getting married in may and dream of going to paris. we know that traveling is expensive and do plan on renting a flat and eating local (cooking/assembling own meals there)… we’re having trouble figuring out what it costs to “live” there for a week.
    any tips? 🙂

A friend just shared one of your recipes and I was browsing your blog and saw in your 2013 post that you went to Paris..this post is so awesome! I’m going to Paris & Rome in May and we were thinking about just renting an apartment in Paris for a few days and then in Rome for a few days instead of a hotel. Thanks for the link to that website I’ve already found some good deals for us!

I am currently on a perfect European vacation with my wonderful husband! We just left Paris yesterday and we are staying in the French riviera for the next couple of days before heading into Italy. Thank you for your inspirational blog. It is fun to look back on your pictures, as we just saw the same sites. And congrats on the baby.
