Risk, Laura Poitras‘ probing look at Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, has only been in theaters for six days, but it is already making its way online.
The documentary feature is now on sale on iTunes, which will exclusively offer the film until June 6, when it becomes available to download on other platforms. Later this summer, Risk will make its television debut on Showtime.
Risk takes viewers into Assange’s life, showing the role Wikileaks played in the recent presidential election and the aftermath. Poitras, who won the Oscar for best documentary in 2015 for Edward Snowden-focused Citizenfour, has been working on the film for six years and was still putting the finishing touches on the project just two weeks ago. After a screening of an early cut in Cannes last summer, the film had its premiere in Los Angeles in late April and already is being hailed as an early Oscar contender. It is now in the middle of a limited theatrical run.
The documentary is part of an effort at iTunes to bring noteworthy documentaries and other indies exclusively to its customers. It has also been the exclusive transactional video home for Sing Street and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Neon is handling distribution for Risk, which counts Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail as an executive producer.
The film is currently available to download for $15 or rent for $7 on iTunes.
