WalesOnline has been named Website of the Year at the UK Regional Press Awards.

Our coverage of the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster was also given the Digital Award.

And the Western Mail's Week End magazine was named Supplement of the Year.

The awards celebrate the best of regional and local journalism.

The Western Mail was highly commended in the Daily Newspaper of the Year category. And its front page marking Aberfan's 50th anniversary was also highly commended in the Front Page of the Year category.

It follows WalesOnline being named News Website of the Year in the Wales Media Awards in March.

The website is also nominated for Regional Website of the Year in the UK Online Media Awards taking place in June, where it is also shortlisted for Best Use of Social Media alongside the likes of BBC News, BuzzFeed, Channel 4 and The Economist.

On Thursday, WalesOnline's business editor, Sion Barry, was recognised at the prestigious Harold Wincott Awards for business, economic and financial journalism.

Sion was named Journalist of the Year for 2016 in the UK nations and regions category, where his coverage of the mooted Cardiff Capital Region Metro was highlighted.

The Digital Award was dedicated to the memory of those killed at Aberfan, those who never stopped grieving and the people kind and brave enough to talk to us about it

WalesOnline editor Paul Rowland dedicated the Digital Award to the people of Aberfan, some of whom spoke publicly for the first time in 50 years. He said: "This is in memory of all the people whose lives changed forever that day - they will never be forgotten."

He added: "We've got an unbelievably talented and committed team who work so hard every day to be imaginative and creative and to tell stories and connect with audiences in the best way they possibly can. This is for every single person who's worked hard to make our website as good as it can be."

Western Mail editor Catrin Pascoe said: "This feels like a huge honour and a privilege. It's been very bittersweet reporting on Aberfan and thanks goes to the team in Cardiff who made it possible and to the people who told their stories for the first time since that tragedy 50 years ago."
