Clarence Chicken Phantom

Rate this book
What’s To Love: We’ve all been Clarence at one point. He’s an optimistic, nine-year-old kid who sees the best in everyone and is happy to play the day away with his best friends, Jeff and Sumo. Writer Derek Fridolfs and illustrator JJ Harrison bring all the heart from the hit Cartoon Network animated series to our first-ever Clarence original graphic novel, and it reads like an extended episode of the show. Take a moment to relive childhood! What It Is: Clarence and his friends join the Rough Riders Scouts for a summer out in the woods. While looking through a cave, they discover a lost journal written by the notorious Black Buck The Pirate (an ancestor of Rough Rider Chicken founder Buckey O’Neill). It details his adventures on the ocean and where he buried his treasure. But he also warns of a phantom chicken that haunts the forest, and drove many of his crew mad. Now, Clarence and his friends are in a race against their rival, Joshua Maverick, to find the buried treasure, while avoiding the chicken phantom!

'Clarence Original Graphic Novel: Chicken Phantom' by Derek Fridolfs is a graphic novel based on a cartoon series. It's pretty silly and seems perfectly fine for younger readers.

Clarence goes off to Rough Riders Regiment Camp, which is run by a guy who runs chicken restaurants. The camp has scouting type badges that can be earned. Clarence isn't very good at earning badges, but he doesn't seem to care. There are pranks played on Clarence and others, some competition for merit badges, and a good old fashioned ghost story. There is also a treasure and the phantom chicken of the title.

I'm not familiar with the character or the cartoon. It's a decent enough story. I didn't care for the art. The art is pretty rough, but maybe the cartoon is too.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from BOOM! Studios and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

This is a pretty funny graphic novel for kids up to pre-teens. Clarence and his friends go to camp and all sorts of strange things occur. There's a phantom chicken, pirate treasure, and merit badges which are the most coveted thing at camp. Definitely made for kids, it was amusing with some good morals added in.

I'd like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for giving me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This story really captures the feel of the animated show. In this story Clarence in his friends are having summer time adventures at Buckey O'neills Rough Riders camp.

The quest for special merit badges leaves Jeff in a manic quest to collect all the badges and Sumo feeling distraught over not having any. This leads Sumo to run away and Clarence to run after him while also discovering buried treasure . Such a fun read!

I loved this graphic novel! My kids and I have been fans of the Clarence cartoon show for a few years now so when I saw that a graphic novel was being released, I had to read it! It made us laugh many times and my kids were at full attention throughout the whole book. It really followed the same flow of the tv show and it was easy to imagine it being another episode of Clarence. Very fun read!

My son loves the cartoon this one is based on. I have to admit, I was NOT a fan when I first watched the show. But the humor kind of grew on me. This graphic novel was quite silly, and had us both giggling.

Likes dumbed down gravity falls, I honestly had to push myself through this one. I believe this is a show on Cartoon Network and the book is likely great for fans, who are probably 8-10 and love fart jokes.

Cartoon Network's popular good-guy hero Clarence goes away to camp with best friends Jeff and Sumo in this graphic novel, and immediately finds himself obsessed with excelling as a Chicken Scout, earning enough badges to be the first to go from Egg to Chicken Hawk even as Jeff and Sumo struggle in their own endeavors at group leadership. Add to the mix a search for a buried treasure and the devious Chicken Phantom, who terrorizes the young campers, and you have a silly but affectionate tribute to childhood sleepaway camp ... that, unfortunately, never really comes together. Reading the book, I could easily see a young reader growing bored with both the static, crudely-drawn illustrations (which, though very like the original animated characters, never leap off the page like the characters do on-screen) and unoriginal storyline quite quickly; as an adult, for me the story seemed a collection of cliches from many books that even I read as a child (many - okay, many - years ago). Just "okay" and maybe for stalwart fans of the series; otherwise best to find Clarence and company on TV, instead. 2/5 stars

Note: I received a free ARC of this title via NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.
