More than 60 people participated in the inaugural Global 6K for Water event in The Woodlands on May 6, joining approximately 27,000 participants worldwide with the goal of helping children gain access to clean water.

More than $2,500 was raised through the event in The Woodlands, which will provide clean water to 50 children, said Matt Erkmann, local event organizer. Worldwide, more than 31,000 children will have access to clean water due to money raised globally through the registration fees from this month’s event.

The 3.7-mile distance chosen for the walk is the average distance people—typically women and children—walk to get water for their families in the developing world, according to World Vision, the organization hosting the event. Although 91 percent of the global population in 2015 had access to improved water sources, approximately 663 million people still do not have access to clean water worldwide, according to World Vision.

The Global 6K event will occur every spring, and Erkmann said there are plans to scale up the event substantially in The Woodlands next year.
