Star Wars: The Last Jedi won’t expand upon Snoke

He’ll remain shrouded in mystery

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will finally address questions fans have about Luke Skywalker, Rey and other characters in the new trilogy, but one mysterious figure will remain a little elusive for a while longer.

In a Reddit AMA, Vanity Fair’s David Kamp answered a few questions people may have had after reading his cover story on The Last Jedi. One question that came up multiple times was about Supreme Leader Snoke, the leader of the First Order and the figure who trained Kylo Ren.

“I asked [director] Rian Johnson about Snoke—Who/what is he?—and Rian was fairly up front in saying that Snoke is not a character he particularly gets into in TLJ,” Kamp said. “Hmmm.”

Like many facets of the Star Wars universe, more information about Supreme Leader Snoke has been released in canonical books that have been released since The Force Awakens came out in 2015. Snoke had multiple apprentices before he came across Kylo Ren, and invested time into him because of the belief that — based on Ren’s heritage — he held an equal amount of good and evil within him. The Supreme Leader’s identity was never revealed in The Force Awakens, but the image of him was shown as a large hologram, portrayed and voiced by Andy Serkis.

Although Snoke may make an appearance in The Last Jedi, don’t expect his role to be greatly expanded on in any way.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on Dec. 15.
