While the news waves groan with stories about “America’s Opioid Epidemic” you may discern that there is little effort to actually understand what’s behind it, namely, the fact that life in the United States has become unspeakably depressing, empty, and purposeless for a large class of citizens. I mean unspeakably literally. If you want evidence of our inability to construct a coherent story about what’s happening in this country, there it is.
I live in a corner of Flyover Red America where you can easily read these conditions on the landscape — the vacant Main Streets, especially after dark, the houses uncared for and decrepitating year by year, the derelict farms with barns falling down, harvesters rusting in the rain, and pastures overgrown with sumacs, the parasitical national chain stores like tumors at the edge of every town.
You can read it in the bodies of the people in the new town square, i.e. the supermarket: people prematurely old, fattened and sickened by bad food made to look and taste irresistible to con those sunk in despair, a deadly consolation for lives otherwise filled by empty hours, trash television, addictive computer games, and their own family melodramas concocted to give some narrative meaning to lives otherwise bereft of event or effort.
These are people who have suffered their economic and social roles in life to be stolen from them. They do not work at things that matter. They have no prospects for a better life — and, anyway, the sheer notion of that has been reduced to absurd fantasies of Kardashian luxury, i.e. maximum comfort with no purpose other than to enable self-dramatization. And nothing dramatizes a desperate life like a drug habit. It concentrates the mind, as Samuel Johnson once remarked, like waiting to be hanged.
On display in the news reports about the mystery of the opioid epidemic is America’s neurotic reliance on supposedly scientific “studies.” Never before in history has a society studied so much and learned so little — which is what happens when you resort to scientizing things that are essentially matters of conduct. It rests on the fallacy that if you compile enough statistics about something, you can control it.
Opioid addiction is just another racket, a personal one, in a culture of racketeering that is edging toward truly epochal failure, for the simple reason that rackets are dishonest, and pervasive dishonesty is at odds with reality, and reality always has the final say.
The eerie thing about reading the landscape of despair is that you can see the ghosts of purpose and meaning in it. Before 1970, there were at least five factories in my little town, all designed originally to run on the water power (or hydro-electric) of the Battenkill River, a tributary of the nearby Hudson. The ruins of these enterprises are still there, the red brick walls with the roofs caved in, the twisted chain-link fence that no longer has anything to protect, the broken masonry mill-races.
The ghosts of commerce are also plainly visible in the bones of Main Street. These were businesses owned by people who lived in town, who employed other people who lived in town, who often bought and sold things grown or made in and around town. Every level of this activity occupied people and gave purpose and meaning to their lives, even if the work associated with it was sometimes hard. Altogether, it formed a rich network of interdependence, of networked human lives and family histories.
What galls me is how casually the country accepts the forces that it has enabled to wreck these relationships. None of the news reports or “studies” done about opioid addiction will challenge or even mention the deadly logic of Wal Mart and operations like it that systematically destroyed local retail economies (and the lives entailed in them.) The news media would have you believe that we still value “bargain shopping” above all other social dynamics. In the end, we don’t know what we’re talking about.
I’ve maintained for many years that it will probably require the collapse of the current arrangements for the nation to reacquire a reality-based sense of purpose and meaning. I’m kind of glad to see national chain retail failing, one less major bad thing in American life. Trump was just a crude symptom of the sore-beset public’s longing for a new disposition of things. He’ll be swept away in the collapse of the rackets, including the real estate racket that he built his career on. Once the collapse gets underway in earnest, starting with the most toxic racket of all, contemporary finance, there will be a lot to do. The day may dawn in America when people are too busy to resort to opioids, and actually derive some satisfaction from the busy-ness that occupies them.

The large extended family I married into eons ago lost its family heroin addict last year. He will not be missed. He was taken from the homeless shelter he was living in to a hospital because he was not feeling good. Returned to the shelter a few hours later he had a heart attack and died.
Over the years he had ripped off virtually everybody in the family to pay for his habit, stealing guns, power tools cash and anything he could get his hands on. He burned all his bridges and as it turned out Eleanor Rigby had more people going to her funeral. I don’t think he even had a funeral.
Twenty years ago I had been given legal guardianship of the then young man along with Mrs. Dog when he was out on bail. That lasted three days before he skipped out and disappeared.
His life was an unbroken string of failed treatment attempts and petty crime and in that he was no different in that from the many other heroin addicts who grace Seattle with their presence.
I get that heroin is highly addictive and I agree that having no life prospects kills any desire to get the monkey off one’s back but my own feeling about long term heroin addicts is that they are selfish self-centered people who care not about the pain they inflict on others in their endless shenanigans of trying to get their next hit.
This is not the first time America’s Opioid Epidemic has been in the news nor will it be the last. Perhaps this time the brouhaha is meant to distract from Bill O’Reilly’s sexual harassments at Fox news, I do not know and I really do not care. Nothing will come of it.
Nothing will come of the opioid epidemic attention this time around and little effort will be invested to understand what’s behind the choices people make to live pointless meaningless lives.
The reason is that the American heroin addict actually embraces some very deep American core values which will not be discussed because they are sacred axioms on which we center our lives.
Selfishness and self-centeredness is the American way.

As a non-US citizen who has lived for some time in the States (New Jersey) and travelled the country extensively, I have to say this is the first time I’ve seen an American put a succinct finger on what is missing in the American psyche – to put it simply, there’s no EMPATHY.
The selfishness & self-centredness is manifest in many small daily personal interactions (“I don’t know you so I don’t care about you at all, and so will not go out of my way to help you in the smallest way”) to the large ‘fuck you’ behaviour of giant corporate entities – banks that screw tiny people to add a few cents to the stock performance for the quarter, and politicians who will take the lobbyists’ $$$ and make laws that disenfranchise and sometimes even actually HARM their own constituents.
That’s not to say individual Americans have no empathy – I know many truly wonderful human beings who just happen to live in the empathy-free zone that is the USA of today

The above is an extremely troubling trend. The NUMBER (but not ratio) of whites is probably the most accurate as helpfully filling out the census mailed to their homes is on the list of stuff that white people like to do. Local blacks would be underrepresented as they are renters who move more often, they represent most of the homeless population, AND there are a lot of refugees under the radar.
Note how the Chinese percentage have actually DROPPED too? This is bad news because Canada have an insanely high immigration quota of 250, 000 that has stayed the same since the 80s. This was alright when the immigrants were first Polish and ethnic Chinese from British Hong Kong (e.g. my family), this was still tolerable when the big influx was from Mainland China, where the people can be a bit rude but at least they work and don’t tend to commit rape. The bulk of Chinese population comes from the pro-natalist Mao years and there has actually been a steep drop in Chinese population since.
The Japanese population has always stayed at the stable 0.5 …and the Koreans rose from 1 to 1.4 probably because they were fearing North Korea and the draft.
So the new immigrants will come from Africa and the Middle East, Africans have 15 children on average and Middle Easterners tend to have around 5.

The trend of having kids as a means of support exists among white women.
That demographic of very young black girls having babies has shrunk drastically, as well.

JHK’s essay today is excellent as usual. It reminded me of what Mike Lofgren wrote in his book “The Party is Over” [2012]:

For my sins, I once found myself thrust into a marketing job, which I both hated and was very bad at. But I learned something, namely: You chase the number. What’s that you say about side effects? Never mind, shut up and chase the number. Marketing is about coming up with one strategy after another to boost, goose, provoke and promote any and all reactions that will make the number go up, until you meet or exceed the quarterly nut handed down by management. A nation of addicted millions doesn’t factor in, because having scope to goose the numbers any way you need to is the single priority that everything else in the society is organized around. Capitalism is a revolutionary force.
I’ve been sewn up by the VA more than once. And the large bottle of vicadins, etc. that I was prescribed seemed a little excessive. I could see that they gave the stuff out pretty much like candy.
Last month the VA cut into me to remove a bladder stone. It’s like an old-fashioned hernia operation, six weeks to heal. I have three scars of that kind so I know what I am talking about.
They gave me 12 5mg oxycodone tablets to take home. That was enough. I have two left for the next toothache. So maybe they have wised up.

It isn’t just about the ‘compliance’ of the medical profession. There’s information here about the pressures medics are under in the US to get good patient scores:

A doctor gets good patient scores by giving patients what they want and not what they need. In a for-money system, which you have in the US, that’s particularly problematic, as the patient sees themselves as a paying customer as much as a patient.
Here in the UK, we don’t have filthy lucre involved at patient level, as treatment is free at the point of care, but in many cases people do have a ‘consumer/supplier’ outlook now towards their doctor which my generation didn’t have. This can be utterly demoralising for doctors, who are caught between over-demanding patients and clinical managers demanding the impossible.
An example would be (1) doctors shouldn’t be prescribing unnecessary antibiotics for the reasons we all know, but (2) you’ve got a demanding patient who wants an antibiotic for a self-limiting condition which absolutely doesn’t require one, but who will, if they don’t get what they want, write a formal complaint that will involve the doctor in three hours of unpaid work to deal with and justify their decisions and which will be included on the doctor’s internal annual appraisal (there’s also an external annual appraisal and a five-year revalidation process, so it’s endless). Everything the doctor prescribes is recorded electronically, so his/her prescribing pattern is laid out for discussion at the appraisal, in comparison with the service average relative to each medication – there are two conflicting sides to please.
The overprescription of opioid painkillers due to patient demand is well documented as a major cause of the current opioid epidemic in the US.
The Boulevard of Despair, flanked by blinking neon groves, peopled with whore and drug addicts, are what’s left for many Americans. That and pointing their fingers at just about everybody except the ones who are responsible for their plight. America is a sad, rushed, joyless nation, whose only goal now is to medicate. When it all comes crashing down, it will not be pretty.
Even the “real jobs” these days are mostly pointless, soul robbing shit. Shuffling digital ones and zeros around on computer screens for amusement, basically. But without those ones and zeros arriving to our bank accounts in a timely manner the plastic thingies we carry around stop working followed by everything else shortly thereafter.

Oh, wow. I wanted to come on to this site today, to see whether a personal tale I learned of yesterday would fit the topic of discussion.
It fits to a tee.
A young woman I know of has recently gotten herself a new job. It is hard work, she had to go through some training to learn it, but she is anxious to better herself. This will be one of two jobs.
Now she wants to move from her present lodgings, and maybe find a place convenient to work (she does not drive). That’s what you are supposed to do, right? Walk or use public transportation.
The smallest apartments in the decent (no roaches, lower chance of getting shot at) buildings she can find, are somehow charging rents commensurate with what people with “good” jobs could have afforded in perhaps the 1970s. I think it is because the area she lives in has a glut of people still holding jobs in one of the rackets.

His ideal woman might be someone who has stored her eggs for later use or the stereotypical trophy wife. Being a successful and ambitious business man has most likely made him into a conceited and arrogant misogynist; women are competition for jobs and money once they step out of their traditional role, he can’t hide these traits for very long. He’s more than likely had several affairs with several secretaries who are trying to keep their jobs in a highly competitive job market in order to get ahead in the company which is why he “doesn’t have a problem getting them interested” which could translate as ‘it doesn’t matter that he isn’t physically attractive’ to most women. That could be part of his overall insecurity.

They have introduced a new “solution” called Narcan, which does wonders for the pharmaceutical industry as it allows them to case in “legally” on the abuse of the drug, but it now not only keep the junkies alive to repeat their mistakes, but compels them to do even more and in greater doses since the fear of overdose is now a thing of the past. Oh well, perhaps if we increase the premiums, the deductibles and the copays on health insurance for the losers that still have health insurance, the problem can at least be abated. Or not, but lets raise them anyway, ok?

It is my belief that peer pressure plays a huge role in the problem. The young people today, and I still have two myself, are being indoctrinated by the Public School System to be obsessive Rule Followers. There are far too many kids around here at least that at dropped off at pre-school care centers at 6:00 or 7:00 am and not picked up at night until 6;00 or 7:00 pm. Summers are spent at one or many camps or programs, and as I have watched these “parentless” children grow up over the course of the last twenty years, many of them grow up very, very angry. It is my experience that THE most important thing that a child wants from its parents is their attention. And it is also my experience that those that are denied this are far more likely to seek out diversions such as drugs to distract themselves from the depression of abandonment.

All the complaints I see about black behavior in cities also applies to the poor whites I’ve seen while living in rural PA for the past 25 years. The only people I know who are still married to their original spouses are my age (in their 60s and 70s). Last year my wife had excruciating pain due to an abscess on her spine. Both us and them did not know what the problem was at the time, but the pain was very real and very painful to deal with for both her and me watching her. In every encounter with “the world’s greatest healthcare system” the nurses treated us like drug-seeking white trash until the doctors figured out what was going on. I will say that the doctors never treated us that way, but by the third visit I was getting quite cynical with the nurses. After it was all over and I wasn’t dealing with my wife in such pain, I was able to think more clearly and realize these nurses probably deal with drug seekers on a constant basis. I have concluded that just like our crappy political system, the people of the US have the healthcare system they deserve. What a pathetic lot we have become, and there’s plenty of blame to go around.
I blame your wife’s bad experience, in part, on the willingness on the part of so many in our society today, to be a ‘narc’. By that I mean they are as bad as the East Germans behind the wall, in grabbing what little bit of importance they can derive from attaching themselves to the government, in some way, and laying down the law on their fellow citizens.
There’s a clerk in a Walmart who pursues vetting customers who wish to renew their fishing licenses, with the same vigor the TSA should be using to stop terrorists.

I was going to share another vignette of American life today, involving a woman in a supermarket at the dinner hour, with a small child screaming for a yogurt treat, but it sounded too much as if I was criticizing the woman’s mothering abilities.
That’s not what I intended, what I really want to say is that, even among the middle class, we are losing the ability to care for our children properly.
Those itty bitty servings of incidental yogurt with candy on top, are not a superfood.
Evidently, parents are being told that yogurt is essential to their child’s well-being. That stuff isn’t any better for them than say, ice cream. Ice cream and other dairy products have been demonized, where do they think yogurt comes from?
Anyway, yogurt has taken off as the antidote to the other food in the supermarket, not just for children. Does this make any sense? Aisles full of processed foods, and a growing section for the food that will save you from the effects of eating the processed food.
BTW, that processed food is labeled, by the government, as being nutritious, and pushed by the likes of Michele Obama, to our schoolchildren. Adding a carrot stick (a “fresh” vegetable) to an unwholesome diet is like pouring clean water into dirty water, and declaring it drinkable.
I’m in a position right now where I can buy and prepare most of my food from scratch, as well as afford luxuries like fruit. Working families can’t. They can’t visit the market on a daily basis either, when you have two people working ever changing schedules, and people working two or more part-time jobs, to make ends meet. People are forced to rely on the foods they can store long term and serve quickly. Then they get beat up on for not whipping up deluxe dinners with ingredients they can no longer afford.
Bernie Sanders, at a rally, was stirring up the crowd. He was objecting to the characterization of Americans as lazy, because as he correctly stated, Americans are some of the most hard-working people in the world. That got cheers. Then he said that because parents had to work such long hours, children weren’t getting the attention they need. Wuh? The room fell silent. I’m not kidding. Children need attention from their parents? You’d think he told them Martians had landed.
Most children rely on the state to get fed because their parents do not have time or refuse to feed them. It was reported that it takes 1.20$ to feed one US kid one balanced meal. In India it only takes 10cents…but they can’t eat meat…only lentils for protein due to their sacred cows. Jamie Oliver analyzed American children’s cafeteria food and was appalled, advocating for real food and not frozen pizzas and mystery meats. He didn’t get very far.

It seemed to me that just as Jamie started to gain some traction from his idea that kids should eat real food, our First Lady abandoned her “Let’s Move” campaign, as well as her garden, and started pushing the lunches provided by Big Agra, with a piece of fruit (mandatory) thrown in, to make it look “fresh”.

I have had the conversation with many produce men about the inconsistency of produce that often the oranges are dry inside, the peaches taste like cardboard and even the most consistent apples can be soft and almost mealy. I have pointed out that the most consistent things are donuts and that if one purchased a package of donuts that tasted in reality like garbage compared to being advertised as a sweet donut that one would be back in a heart beat. And one apple or one orange at $1.99 per pound is not cheap, but how many times have you just thrown away “bad” fruit.

I have been on a HFLC (high fat, low carbohydrate) diet for quite some time now. Not only have I lost weight, some chronic and painful conditions I suffered from for years have been dramatically alleviated.
I am not eating less than before. I am not exercising more. I always did watch what I ate, and I always did exercise.

It was delicious, but I don’t know if I can take another bug eyed session on the toilet; last time somebody called the cops on me.

My practioner told me I was stubborn for not taking statins. I wanted to say, “Yes Mother” but I remembered we did not have heart problems until everyone started eating ole0, margarine and “you think it’s butter, but it’s snot” instead of actual milk and butter. Eggs are another food we have prospered on for eons. The real problem is inflammation in the arteries and veins. Cholesterol is a bandaid your body makes naturally to keep the inflammation from getting worse. Avoiding the inflammation lowers “bad” cholesterol.
Vigorous aerobic exercise i.e. 300 calories minimum per day is a fine way to get total cholesterol below 200.
HDL goes up some but the genetic predisposition keeps mine below 40 even with robust exercise. LDL held in check with exercise regimen.
The statins have a funny side effect: Rhabdomyolysis which is destruction of muscle tissue. The poison just made me weaker and made my muscles hurt.
Get your butt on a treadmill and watch some of that other powerful narcotic and national drug -TeeVee – while getting your cholesterol under control.

That is absolutely false. If we shop online, it is only because the stores quit carrying the merchandise we want to buy.
If you read the reviews that often accompany online clothing sites, you see that women are frustrated with the amount of time and money we have to waste, buying a particular garment, guessing what size will fit, returning the garment, finding out that a different color in the same garment you already own was manufactured in a different Third World country, so it isn’t the same size or even the same fabric as the other one you bought, etc.
I think they want us all online so they can monitor every single purchase we make, and force us away from using cash, among other reasons.

I was rewarded recently for 15 years of service and devotion to my employer. I got to choose a gift from a catalog of ‘stuff’ that came in the mail. I was seriously leaning towards the binoculars, but instead chose a turntable (or “record player”).
It showed up on my porch a couple of weeks later, and I must say, it has been a joy to have. I have a collection of LPs that I haven’t listened to for a while, and reconnecting with the music therein has been delightful.
But, as an unexpected bonus, it occurred to me that when I want to listen to music, I just throw a record on the turntable,
drop a needle on it, and Bob’s your uncle! I don’t have to fire up the computer, don’t need an app, no thumbs up/ down, nobody’s keeping track of what I’m playing (unless this record player belongs in the Internet of Things category). Don’t need to go before the ‘priest’, hat in hand, to see if he’ll allow me access to the WWW deity.
And the artwork on the LP jackets is pretty cool, too.

I work with people who are prescribed medications and alternatives to medications to deal with their chronic pain to help them not become addicted because people want to be “pain free” this is what drives opioid and other addictions in our society. The “Physician” that’s been given the power in our society doesn’t know how to “treat” the patient. He now admits that the role (of governing) is “much tougher (more difficult) than he thought”. The pain of our society is going to be treated by someone who may be willing to kill the patient so he can say that he “tried”. They didn’t have the “will” to live” its their fault they wouldn’t listen to me or follow my directions(even when his directions are totally incompetent).

I grew up in a community like that in the south. My grandfather owned property on a nearby lake and sold waterfront lots for $500-$1000 in the 50s and 60s. People built small cabins or put mobile homes on these lots and dug wells and septic tanks. The road leading in was gravel and clay and impassable after a rain storm. There were farms with cows, barns and fishing ponds nearby. Small businesses got by on the locals by selling everything from fishing line and bait, to animal feed and gasoline for outboard motors. I remember spending weeks there in the summer and believed it was a slice of Heaven.
A few miles away life was different. On the other side of the hill from the lake there were rows of negro tenement and share-cropping shacks with no in-door plumbing, running water and no electricity. The big farms nearby had long since shut down (probably in the 1920s or 1930s) so the black families there depended on the whites for employment, but it was not without cost. They did the jobs no one else wanted to do like cooking and cleaning for the white families.
There was no healthcare to speak of because there were not doctors and no hospitals. If these poor blacks got sick they died. If they got out of line and asked for equal treatment in the form of education, job training, healthcare and the basic necessities of life (or even just decency and respect) their homes and their churches were burned at best and they disappeared at worst.
Yes, life was more idyllic in those days if you were white, Christian and male. I wonder how many Negroes worked alongside whites in those mills beside the river.

The wreck of such a large swathe of the United States happened as a result of the efforts of a handful of very wealthy people working hand-in-glove with American and other national governments over a long period of time. I just read an article in one of those self important east coast magazines about the last election. There they talked about unskilled White Americans that voted for Trump. The writer evidently used the term “unskilled” as a pejorative. Why? So as to invalidate the results of November 8. If it wasn’t Russian meddling, it was “unskilled” and, by implication, ignorant people that committed this act of political vandalism.
I wondered whether the writer had ever dirtied their hands working in a factory. I sure have. So did my dad and many relatives. And I can tell you that nobody that works in such places survives in them long term as “unskilled”. A factory has a multitude of systems ie hydraulic and electrical powered mechanisms, that have to work in concert to move and process materials and physical objects. Everyone working in such a setting has to know his place and how the systems work in his corner of the facility. There’s no way out of it, you depend on others and others depend on you, you need to trouble-shoot, you have to monitor and physically operate the machines. Even with the much talked about “automation” as the fall-guy for job-loss, the machines doing the work have to be monitored and adjusted so products come out within required tolerances.
Factories were never places for “unskilled” people. They need a level of engineering skill to organize and build them plus a multitude of workers with trade certifications. Even people without trade papers had to learn on the job and acquire a high degree of skill and knowledge and produce results. I know this because I saw it and did it. But this is just to illustrate the depth of class bigotry that you get towards people in fly-over country.

I didn’t even know Vermont when I read the patterns about construction, yea these many years ago. (When that was a new subject for me). And they think that people and institutions are like chess-pieces that you can rearrange at will.
You can see the exultation in coastal bubble cities not only among preposterously rich Oligarchs but also their enabling clerisy, you see the the spectacular displays of wealth, the no-holds barred hedonism, the smug self-justification. Pride in other words.
But they don’t see what’s in plain view. The chess-pieces are re-arranging themselves as if they all have a mind and interests of their own. Which, of course, they do. In Kunstlerian terms what we have is increasing disorder, an array of failing arrangements originally put in place to serve elite interests.
Globalists sneer at the rise of popular outrage – which they paint as ignorance and racism – they tell themselves that they command the Fed and the Treasury, that they are too important to fail or jail.
And they reassure themselves that the violent disaggregation of nation states in wide swathes of the globe is manageable, that this disarray won’t come here, that with the application of military force and diplomacy and some judicious bribing and cajoling, all this will pass.
All this WILL pass, but not necessarily to elite advantage. Quite simply, they screwed too many chess-pieces and these chess-pieces are too numerous to manage.
We’ve already seen some of the consequences. Trump is one, Le Pen another, Brexit another. But there are others that get no attention, like Orban and Civic Alliance in Hungary, the Law and Justice party in Poland. The elite turned up the heat and now they’re amazed that the pot is boiling.
But there’s something else, the global device for communication and surveillance, the internet, enables people to work from a distance. And this gig economy of part-timers, free-lancers is global. If you want cheap labor over the internet, you can get it from Malaysia.
So, this preening, self regarding bi-coastal Creative Class beware. If you have delusions of superiority over people in fly-over country, if you look down on them, well, you may be next to join their ranks in destitution.

I am reading Peter Hitchens’s The Abolition of Britain for the second time. Talking about the rapid, ugly transformation of the English landscape after WW2 where slum communities were broken up when they were moved into new housing estates far from city centres, shops and anything else, he mentions that a similar phenomenon in the US was largely responsible for the rise of feminism in the 60s.

I wrote my first letter in nearly thirty years to a national newspaper a few weeks ago (to the Sunday Independent) in response to a very rare article about immigration, which was of course strongly in favour of it. The author stated that more than one in ten people were born outside Ireland. I wrote to say that this was true (it would also have been true to say that more than one in a hundred was) but that it she would also have been true to write more than one in six, seeing as the official OECD figure is 17.6%, which is pushing one in five (and that this would not include illegal immigrants, whose number can only be guessed at.) I also pointed out that Ireland ranks 7th in the proportion of immigrants and that its rate of recent immigration (ie over the past 5 years) is 46%, which is nearly three times the OECD average.
On the same page as this article was another about a 17 year old girl of Nigerian descent. She was very happy as a four-year-old in Nigeria but friends of her family (I assume this would really be family) told her parents that life in Co. Clare was very nice and they should come over. She said that it was very uncomfortable at times being the only black child in her local school and that the Irish still had a bit of work to do to accept people from different ethnic backgrounds. She did not say on what grounds her family were allowed to stay. I assume it was the usual “I have arrived and I now claim asylum”.
This is only one way in which Ireland is abolishing itself, irretrievably. The corner stone of the whole process is the demonization of the Catholic Church by means of clerical sexual abuse scandals and abuse at children’s homes. As you know, I am very sceptical of such claims because they fit in perfectly with the wider pattern of contemporary witch hunts, the most notable over her being the demonization of the late dj Jimmy Savile, who had been knighted and was famous for his charity fund raising and his eccentric appearance and life style. Along with a few others, who have examined this extraordinary case in great detail, I am convince that the evidence against him is non-existent, yet he was labelled shortly after his death a few years ago as one of Britain’s most prolific paedophiles, a man who spent every waking moment planning his ‘abuse’ and commiting his crimes In Plain Sight (yet nobody ever saw him doing them).
The Irish witch hunt, which has been going on for thirty years, is anti-clerical and I am convinced that the evidence is equally shaky. The irishsalem website (Rory Connor) is the only place I know which has systematically debunked this stuff.
As in America and everywhere else this is a powerful mass fantasy. I mean not just witch hunts but the whole of political correctness. Evidence is fabricated, exaggerated or ignored in a wide range of areas as far as I have been able to make out over the last two years: immigration (the above example is a very mild one – see French TV Libertés for a systematic examination – the weekly IMedia programme, but you need to understand French), global warming, scientific materialism and the so called ‘sceptical’ movement, the ridiculous response to Brexit, the even more ridiculous reaction to Trump’s election, the demonization of Russia and Putin (the latest gassing in Syria is a classic of the genre) and others that I can’t be bothered to think of.
As I mentioned here before English journalist Christopher Booker (who also wrote an excellent book debunking AGW) wrote a precociously insightful book in 1968 called The Neophiliacs, which analysed the birth of the Swinging Sixties in England as a 5-stage mass fantasy. He is entirely right. Other writers, such as our host here, have been struck by the fantastic nature of what is going on. It makes any other explanation somewhat redundant because you cannot explain irrational behaviour by rational motivations.

Stories about the ‘Elite’ and the Church raping children are (with a very few exceptions indeed) fantasy. The way to tell a fantasy is to dig into the claims. Usually you need go more than half an inch down before you see there is nothing there. This is my point; I am not meeting fantasy with counter-fantasy but trying to see what is actually true. It would take a thousand men a hundred years to check it all out, but what I have seen so far makes me agree with Trump’s assessment of the press as a disgrace and to laugh at the claim of ‘distinguished’ reporter from the Washington Post (Woodward? The Watergate one?) that ‘it is not fake news’. It is fake.
Vatican 2 seems to me to have been a very big mistake. I don’t know much about it but I am reading Spanish historian Pio Moa (Rodriguez), a former Communist terrorist, who claims persuasively that Franco’s rule (I won’t say ‘regime’) laid the foundation for democracy in Spain after the incredible destructiveness of the self-proclaimed Republicans (who only wrecked the republic). His position was made very difficult by Vatican 2’s opposition.
Two examples in support of my earlier point. I finished two books a few weeks ago (both as it happens recommended by Peter Hitchens).
1 Re-reading of Ed West’s The Diversity Illusion. What I had not noticed the first time round was his final chapter where he compares support for mass immigration, in the face of the huge damage it does in so many ways, to a millennial cult. I was expecting something like that and I got it. I just wasn’t paying attention in the first reading.
2 Booker and North’s The Great Deception which examines in great detail the history of British involvement in the EU. The final chapter (‘Deception or Self-Deception?’) points out the utopian nature of the project, one that is built on lies to the electorates and which aims to unite Europe by buereaucratic means with shelf-fuls of legislation. Last year Booker, who as I said above was one of the first to discern the fantasy nature of the global warming theory, showed in a newspaper column how he nevertheless didn’t appreciate the full range and depth of the mass fantasy when he used these words: “from what we all now know about Savile”. This of course should read, “from what we all think we know about Savile”.
Don’t get taken in by seductive fantasies. They are lies.
Just to add that the dismal thought struck me yesterday that when the fantasy hits the brick wall of reality, as it surely must, that won’t be enough to wake people up from it. Then you can perform complicated actions while still staying centered.
Therefore, meditation is not against action. It is not an escape from life. It simply teaches a new way of life; you become the center of a cyclone.
Externally it may seem that you live a normal life, but in reality you will live more intensely; with more joy, clarity, vision, and creativity. Yet, you will be aloof, just as a watcher on the hills, simply seeing all that is happening around you.
You are not the doer of any activity, you are the watcher. That is the whole secret of meditation. Doing continues on its own accord. You can do everything, only one thing is not allowed, your awareness should never be lost. That awareness should remain absolutely unclouded and undisturbed.
The essential theme or spirit of meditation is to learn how to witness.
A crow is crowing and you are listening. There is a object and a subject. But you can not see a witness who is seeing both? The crow, the listener, and still there is someone who is watching both. It is such a simple phenomenon.
You see a tree. You are there, the tree is there, but you can not find one more thing? There is a witness in you which can see you seeing the tree.
Watching is meditation. What you watch is irrelevant. You can watch a tree, a river, the clouds, or you can watch children playing. It does not matter what you watch, the objects are not important.
Remember one thing: meditation means awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. Action is not important, but the awareness that you bring to your action is important. Walking can be a meditation if you walk alert. Sitting can be a
meditation if you sit alert. Listening to the birds can be a meditation if you listen with awareness. Just listening to the inner noise of your mind can be a meditation if you remain alert and watchful.
The quality of observation, the quality of being aware and alert, is the most important and that is what meditation is. One should be alert and watchful, then whatever you do will be meditation.
There are four basic steps:
Watch your physical actions (body)
Watch your thoughts (mind)
Watch your feelings and emotions (heart)
Watch the watcher – Ultimate awareness

Have fun trying to get any sleep on that nonsense! I had to browbeat and complain several different times to finally wind up with some paltry amount of oxycodone, which they doled out less than a dozen. What a joke. And yet for some people it’s as if they’re handing out pez candy, I just don’t understand it. I used to own a small car lot that unfortunately had to engage in the usurious “buy here pay here” crap, and I had several customers who would routinely offer to pay their car notes in dilaudid, OxyContin, and even methadone. Too bad these offers never coincided with times when I was actually in pain from some accident or injury. Probably for the best I guess, lest I become one of the walking dead in this nation of zombies. As my favorite uncle always says “pain is a good thing; it lets you know you’re still alive.”

Hey Chuck, I’ve had the same experience. A 7 foot tall stack of railroad ties fell on top of me when I foolishly cut the steel band holding them; its the closest Ive ever come to getting knocked out. My supervisor turned white as a ghost because he probably thought I was dead. I saw stars just like it happens in cartoons. People were talking to me but I couldn’t hear anything and could barely see.
Anyway, I hurt all over for a week and the doctor gave me nothing for it.
But you know what I found out?
Every girlfriend Ive ever had has had a stockpile of pain medication hidden away somewhere in their house; this is what women do. They get prescribed so much pain medication I just skip the doctor and go straight to them.
Antibiotics too.
They got all that stuff, valium, Ritalin… everything.
I think the reason doctors are so quick to prescribe pain medication for women is because women will whine and complain until you give up and give in to make them go away.
And if worse comes to worse, they can always cry.
In contrast, men catch hell if we punk out.
6 months ago I dropped a 3 pound hammer on my left thumb. It swelled up twice its size and turned beat red; then it started getting darker and I told myself the first sign of purple and its doctor time.

There was/is very little training for these entry level labor jobs. Usually the steel bands had already been cut by someone else.
The best thing about the event is the Harry Home owner customer was not standing near me because that would have been a law suit.
Understand that the stack didn’t fall as soon as I cut the band. Each 4X4 stack has 2, and it was after I cut the 2nd one and was setting the band snipper down that the first row slowly tipped over onto me slow and silent. Somebody actually yelled “look out!” (might have been the customer?)
Its possible they may have stopped stacking them over our heads due to this; or started using the fork lift to make sure there were alway a few stacks at ground level at the start of every work day.
I learned something alright.
