NEW YORK - Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) of the Seton Hall men's basketball team has been named the best in the Metro New York region. He is the 2017 recipient of the Lieutenant Frank J. Haggerty Award as the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Player of the Year, the organization announced Wednesday. Delgado will receive this honor Wednesday night at the annual Met Writers dinner at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, N.Y.

Delgado becomes the 12th Seton Hall recipient of the award, joining an elite group of Pirates to be recognized as Metro New York's best. The list of Seton Hall's Haggerty Award winners include Isaiah Whitehead (2016), Andre Barrett (2004), Adrian Griffin (1996), Arturas Karnisovas (1994), Terry Dehere (1993), John Morton (1989), Mark Bryant (1988), Dan Callandrillo (1982), Nick Galis (1979), Nick Werkman (1964) and Walter Dukes (1953). Delgado's honor represents the third time that The Hall has had the Haggerty winner in back-to-back years.

The Haggerty Award puts the cap on an incredible year for Delgado, who averaged 15.2 points and a nation-leading 13.1 rebounds and 5.03 offensive rebounds while shooting 54 percent from the field. He finished second in the country with 27 double-doubles and had the longest consecutive double-double streak of any Div. I student-athlete this season with 13 straight from Jan. 22 to March 9. He also led the BIG EAST in rebounding with a conference single-season record 253 and 14.1 per game.

Delgado's feats this past season set additional milestones. He was the first Pirate since 2001 to record a 20-20 game, producing 21 points and 20 rebounds in a Jan. 22 win over St. John's. Three days later he became the first BIG EAST player to record consecutive 20-rebound games when he grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds against Butler. Towards the end of the season, he became just the fifth Seton Hall player to ever record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.

Delgado also proved to rise to the occasion when the Pirates were in need. He  had a 19-point, 16-rebound night to lead The Hall to a Garden State Hardwood Classic championship on Dec. 23. He poured in a career-high 26 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in 40 minutes of play to lead the Pirates to a crucial overtime win at Georgetown on Feb. 4. He notched 17 rebounds and 17 points in a home win over No. 20 Creighton. He helped defeat Xavier on Feb. 22 with 20 points and 16 rebounds, and he and the Pirates delivered a huge upset win at No. 12 Butler on March 4 when he had 20 points and 16 boards. He then beat Marquette in the BIG EAST quarterfinals on March 9 in many different ways with his near triple-double of 12 points, 16 rebounds and a career-high nine assists.

In addition to the Haggerty Award, Delgado long list of accolades this season includes unanimous first-team All-BIG EAST, BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament, USBWA All-District, first-team NABC All-District and ECAC All-Star. He also was a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, given to the nation's top center.

Delgado's accomplishments helped the Pirates achieve greatness as the team went 21-12 overall and 10-8 in the BIG EAST. The Hall reached the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals for the third time in the last four years, and the Pirates advanced to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season, a feat the program had not achieved since 1993-94.
