LIVES

Dana Gillespie

London Chelsea 606 Club

7/5/17

View: up front

Ambassador of risqué blues and Hammer Films starlet, Dana Gillespie, was on feisty form amid the bohemian basement feel of the 606 Club, with songs like Fuck Me, It’s Hot In Here and 24/7 matching the vibe perfectly. At one point, Dana mentioned that she writes each of her band members’ set-lists on escorts’ business cards that she picks up from phone booths and pointed out that one sex worker offering “water sports” would be apt, as Dana was herself a British water-skiing champion for three years! That was just one of her many amusing asides, but it was the stories that she sings in her songs, full of raw emotion, and her love of the craft, that sets her apart as one of the blues’ best exponents.

Her band were as tight as a wound spring and their tributes to the likes of Bessie Smith, along with Dana’s self-penned work, showed why Bowie, Dylan, Donovan and Page made her part of their lives. Dana doesn’t just sing the blues, it’s in her D(a)NA. Agents looking for genuine talent, take note. Mark Mawston

The Filthy Tongues

Kirkcaldy Windsor

19/5/17

View: uninterrupted

The Filthy Tongues made their Kirkcaldy debut, though three of the band had played the venue nearly 30 years ago in Goodbye Mr MacKenzie, supported in both cases by locals, The Twist. The Filthy Tongues opened with slow-builder, Amsterdam, then moved into several tracks from their recent Jacob’s Ladder. Their 75-minute set-list featured all of that outing, plus several classic MacKenzies songs.

Frontman and guitarist Martin Metcalfe, bassist Fin Wilson, drummer Derek Kelly and keyboardist/guitarist David Scobie gave the audience a blistering performance, before ending with The Rattler, then blasting into Bowhead Saint and finishing with Goodwill City. Let’s hope that it’s not another quarter-century before they return to the Forth. Bobby Ross
