Before Tom Cruise returns to the skies for Top Gun: Maverick, he'll be getting back into the cockpit in American Made.

But from the moment he crash-lands in a suburb, covered in cocaine, it's clear this is a very different kind of story.

Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), the fact-based thriller stars Cruise as Barry Seal, a commercial airline pilot who worked for the CIA, the DEA, and notorious crime lord Pablo Escobar.

If you're dying to know how things end for Seal, you could just look him up on Wikipedia – as the trailer cheekily reminds you, "some of this shit really happened."

But after watching the trailer above, we're thinking that the movie will be a much more entertaining way to find out.

American Made is in theaters September 29.
