Hutto ISD Deputy Superintendent Ed Ramos has been named the district’s interim superintendent beginning June 9.

The appointment comes after current Superintendent Doug Killian announced his resignation to assume the same role for neighboring Pflugerville ISD. Killian’s last contract day with HISD is June 30, but his last working day in the district is June 8. Killian announced his intention to join PfISD on April 10. After being named the finalist, a three-week period is mandated before a contract is offered. The contract agreement was announced May 4.

Ramos received the support of the board of trustees.

“Knowing that our district is headed into a period of transition, the board of trustees is confident that we selected an interim superintendent who is capable and up to the challenge,” board President Connie Gooding said. “Not only will Ed Ramos guide us, he will continue to inspire our community with his positive leadership and community involvement.”

Ramos has been with HISD since 2005 and has served as deputy superintendent since 2015. In 2010, prior to Killian being named superintendent, Ramos served as the interim superintendent for half the school year. In addition to deputy superintendent, Ramos has served HISD as business manager, director of finance, and assistant superintendent of finance and operations.

“I appreciate the board’s confidence in me,” Ramos said. “Great things have been happening in Hutto ISD under Dr. Killian’s leadership, and we want to make sure we maintain that momentum. It’s our teachers and staff that make our district one of the most desirable school districts in Central Texas. I look forward to also working with our community partners as our district and community continue growing.”

Killian will start with PfISD on July 1. During his seven years in HISD, it became one of the fastest-growing school districts in the state. He credited Ramos with having the district in a great place prior to taking over in 2010 and has confidence that the same will happen this time.

“In my seven years of working with Ed, I’ve found him to be a model servant leader who loves the Hippo Nation,” Killian said. “Ed is a wonderful choice as interim superintendent. Because of the great work he did as interim in 2010, I was able to step into the district and hit the ground running. He helped cut my learning time in half.”

The board is expected to begin reviewing proposals from superintendent search firms soon. A timeline for hiring a new superintendent has not yet been set.

In PfISD, Killian replaces Alex Torrez, who had been with the district since 2013. After Torrez announced his desire to work through his contract and then retire, the district placed Torrez on paid administrative leave and then negotiated a separation agreement. The announcement came Feb. 10.

Gary Patterson has served PfISD as interim superintendent since Jan. 2.
