Deadpool fans won’t have to wait as long as expected to see the film’s sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox is shuffling the release dates for its slate of X-Men films, moving Deadpool 2 to May 18th, two weeks earlier than its original June 1st release date .

Deadpool 2 isn’t the only film on the move. The studio is also bumping its horror-tinged The New Mutants nearly a year. The film was originally scheduled to be released on April 13th 2018, but now it won’t be arriving in theaters until February 22nd, 2019. THR reports that the moves are partially to ensure that The New Mutants and Deadpool 2 don’t overlap theatrical runs in some overseas markets.

The studio’s long-delayed adaptation of Gambit is also getting pushed, moving from February 14th, 2019, to June 7th, 2019. That shift comes alongside the revelation that director Gore Verbinski has departed the project due to scheduling issues.

Deadpool 2’s new release date puts it in theaters a week before Disney is slated to release Solo: A Star Wars Story. The original Deadpool was a surprise box office smash when it hit theaters in 2016, but expectations are now high for the upcoming sequel. One wouldn’t normally expect a studio to put itself in a position where a Star Wars film could eat into its second weekend at the box office, but it appears Fox isn’t scared of the competition. Given the problems that Lucasfilm has faced with Solo’s production, and the fact that the studio hasn’t even begun marketing the film, Fox may feel its sarcastic hero is a safer bet for audiences than Solo.
