After a day of rumors that Jerry Sands was in talks with the San Francisco Giants, it became official after the game when a team official confirmed that the former big leaguer had in fact accepted their offer and will report to their Double-A affiliate in Richmond.

Sands was removed from the lineup -- he was initially slated to play, of course -- but with the team at least at the start of tonight's game, and was listed on the lineup card as a bench player.  However, by the time the game had ended, Sands was already gone, likely on his way to pack his belongings and head south.

Sands was putting up MVP-type numbers in Somerset; he hit .319 with 13 homers and 45 RBI in 39 games with the Patriots, and had back-to-back multi-homer games in the club's most recent road trip to Lancaster.

Somerset's lineup will certainly have a massive void without Sands, but has already proven they can win without him via tonight's 2-1 win.
