Global trade is beneficial to Americans — that's the takeaway from a new FedEx Corp. commissioned survey of U.S. small business leaders.

Memphis-based FedEx released the results from its second, national FedEx Trade Index, which showed that 84 percent of the business leaders who participated agreed that expanding trade between the U.S. and other countries was a “good thing.” In 2016, that figure was 77 percent.

“These results show even more American small business leaders support expanding trade than last year,” said Raj Subramaniam, executive vice president, chief marketing and communications officer of FedEx Corp., in a release. “One thing is certain — small business leaders continue to view the growth of global supply chains and trade as beneficial to American workers.”

Morning Consult conducted the survey for FedEx. A total of 1,592 small business executives were surveyed during the period of March 9-21. Of those surveyed, 69 percent were small business owners, presidents and CEOs; 31 percent were small business leaders, such as directors and managers.

The majority of those surveyed — 58 percent — were from businesses that had less than 20 employees. Business leaders with 20-99 employees accounted for 21 percent; those with 100-500 employees were another 21 percent. The survey has a margin of error of plus/minus 2 percentage points.

FedEx's first Trade Index survey was conducted in fall 2016.

FedEx was founded in 1971 and today serves 220 countries and territories with more than 400,000 employees. Annual revenue for fiscal 2016 was $50.4 billion, according to its corporate fact sheet.
