Physical Effort: The work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods, often while operating power equipment and tools. Work involves bending, stooping, kneeling, and working in uncomfortable positions. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment is required, but not on a continual basis. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy or bulky items weighing more than 50 pounds, moving and setting ladders or scaffolding, and conductiong snow removal and grounds maintenance.
Work Environment: Most work is performed indoors in temperature controlled and well ventilated areas. When working outside the incumbent may be subject to cuts, burns, muscle strains, electrical shock, and abrasions while repairing and handling equipment. The incumbent may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces that are dusty and dirty or at extreme heights on ladders and scissor lifts. The incumbent can be subjected to vibration from heavy cleaning equipment and skin irritations from cleaning solutions. Care is required to avoid injuries when working on ladders, scaffolds or lifts, and when using heavy powered equipment. Protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves are required.

The incumbent for this position will perform assignments associated with the maintenance and repair of grounds, buildings, exterior structures, BLM assets, and related fixtures and utilities, The incumbent will also assist the equipment operator as needed at multiple locations.These duties may be performed at BLM facilities and/or in support of resource and recreation projects. Typical duties may involve carpentry, painting, plumbing, welding, grounds maintenance, motor vehicle operation, equipment maintenance and other similar duties.
Screen-out Element: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. This includes performing routine maintenance to equipment involving carpentry, masonry, cement finishing, electrical, mechanical, painting, or plumbing work.
