Tokyo's main stock index closes lower on the day

The first lower close of the year by Nikkei since it breached the 23,000 level last week. The drag today comes from the tech sector as well as from consumer staples. Asian equities are mostly having a mixed day in trading today, as the Hang Seng and CSI 300 indices are higher - but the Shanghai Composite and Kospi are both lower.
Meanwhile, earlier we had Australia's ASX 200 close the day lower by 0.64% at 6,096.70.
