Real Madrid and Juventus. Two of the biggest clubs in the world, two sides that boast some of the greatest talent on the planet.

The Ronaldo-led attack against a Buffon-backed defence. Little wonder both the bookies and the pundits are struggling to call which way Cardiff's Champions League final will go.

So there's every chance that it might take a bit of luck to see who will lift European football's biggest prize at Wales' National Stadium.

And if that's the case, it could be good fortune for Gareth Bale and Real Madrid after being handed the stadium's 'lucky end'.

When the stadium hosted English football's cup finals as Wembley was being re-developed, fans picked up on the fact the side with the home dressing room were invariably the ones left celebrating.

Based on the north side of the stadium, their fans would occupy the same half of the ground, walking out to greet supporters packed in the side of the solitary double-tiered stand that backs onto the Arms Park and rugby club.

For the first 11 finals the then-Millennium Stadium hosted from 2001, the team in the home dressing room with their fans in the north end were victorious.

The games included League Cup finals, Football League Trophy finals, Play-Off final and, of course, the FA Cup final with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham all succumbing to what was quickly being described as the curse of the south dressing room.

At one stage, Feng Shui experts were brought in, although stadium chiefs were adamant that there was no physical difference between the changing rooms and that it was simply “a statistical anomaly”.

But it was only after successful Welsh artist Andrew Vicari painted a mural of a dragon “to defeat bad spirits” in the south dressing room did the 'hoodoo' come to an end as Stoke City won their League One play-off final against Brentford.

The fortunes of the ends balanced out after that, though only once did a side using the south dressing room win one of the six FA Cup finals held in Cardiff between 2001 and 2006, coming when Manchester United beat Millwall in 2004.

Interestingly, Juventus have been designated the home team – named first and wearing their iconic Bianconeri shirts.

Yet they will have the south side of the ground, with their benches on the south side - or the left hand side as the teams come out of the tunnel. Though not confirmed, that is expected to see them use the south dressing room which became the 'home' dressing room in 2008 on the behest of Wales rugby boss Warren Gatland.

So Real look set to have the 'lucky' end, with Bale hoping he has a lucky end to his injury-hit season by seeing the La Liga giants becoming the first team to retain the modern Champions League.

However, Juventus will be pleased to know it's not all black and white. After the 'curse' was broken, three League Cup final wins came from the side on the south end.

And it includes the last major football final to be played at arena, when Chelsea beat Arsenal in the 2007 League Cup.

Has the luck changed? We're about to find out.
