In the episode, Lars Barriga -- the show's resident high-school slacker and Steven's BFF -- decides to bring an ube cake to a potluck.
Lars chose the ube cake, in response to Steven telling him to make something that "represents him."

Ube is Tagalog for purple yam, and it's used to make various pastries in the Philippines -- including chiffons, puddings and swiss rolls. It's also what gives the purple Raindrop Cake its colour.
The reference has excited many, with some welcoming the Filipino reference as a sign of diversity; many voice actors in Steven Universe are of Filipino descent, including Deedee Magno Hall (who voices Pearl), Shelby Rabara (who voices Peridot) and Jennifer Paz (who voices Lapis Lazuli):
