Nintendo Ramps up Switch Production Again; Super Mario Odyssey Might Drop in November

Nintendo's looking to move 18-20 million Switch consoles before March 31, 2018.

According to sources close to Nintendo who spoke to the Financial Times, Nintendo has ordered another production increase to meet demand of Switch consoles for the holiday season (via GameSpot). The company's plan is to sell 18 million units by the end of the next fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2018.

Financial Times asked analysts to weigh in on the story. Those experts stated that Nintendo's goal of 18 million could be intentionally conservative. Morgan Stanley's Hirotoshi Murakami said that Nintendo could be on track to sell closer to 20 million consoles; setting the bar at 18 million would allow Nintendo to either meet or exceed those expectations.

The report published by Financial Times, which you have to be a subscriber to read, went on to mention that Super Mario Odyssey will launch in November. Nintendo revealed the game, a single-player, 3D Mario action-adventure title in the vein of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, back in January during its Switch reveal presentation. At that time Nintendo would only said that Super Mario Odyssey would launch before the end of 2017. Nintendo announced earlier this month that it will focus largely on Super Mario Odyssey at this year's E3.

Given how Switch's release schedule has shaped up thus far, Nintendo could very well meet and smash through its projection of 18 million consoles sold. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched in late April and immediately set sales charts afire. Super Mario Odyssey is bound to move units, while Arms—a one-on-one fighter and the company's newest IP—launches on June 16, the week of E3. Splatoon 2 will follow in July.

Nice, I really hope Super Mario Odyssey will turn out to be awesome.

I really can't wait to see some new gameplay videos, I hope they drop soon.

Same. I'm iffy on Arms and Splatoon 2: they look good, but more multiplayer focused, and I don't play many multiplayer games. Mario Odyssey looks like the successor to Mario 64, Sunshine (so underrated!), and Galaxy, which is much more my speed.

I'm with you. I got my switch primarly for single player and BoTW is fitting that nicely. I also hoped to catch up on back Nintendo titles I've missed over the past decade. hoping Odyssey knock it out of the park.

Agree completely, Switch is my sp chill machine, I doubt I'll be getting into mp stuff on it

Pretty much I am a SP gamer as well(don't have the time for MP).

Splatoon 2 is supposed to have a good SP in it, but yeah its more MP. Same with Arms it does remind me a lot of Power Stone that gets my juices flowing but still, I wonder if you can play it with a pro controller.

Yeah I hope so, it could be really special I can't wait for the vids.

Arms plays pretty well with a pro controller, moving is easier but you miss out on hooking punches in different directions at the same time. That said its enough of a fighting game that I'm out. Seems polished and pretty neat but not for me.

Splatoon 1had an excellent, if short single player campaign. I expect more of that in 2.

Whether or not I get it will depend on to what degree the SP mode functions as a tutorial for multiplayer. I like Quake 3 and UT, but you know they're MP games at heart because the SP modes boil down to simulations of the MP gameplay. They're fun, but both games are ultimately meant to be played with others.

I know Splatoon 2 is supposed to have a campaign, but if all Nintendo does is wrap a thin story shell around the same general flow and objectives as one would find in the MP, I'll pass on it.

That wasn't really the original at all. Boss fights and bizarre areas you have to traverse while sneaking around patrols. A few different enemy types. There were a few levels that more closely simulated online play but that was maybe 4 of like 60 levels.

At minimum (if you don't have a Wii U that you can play Splatoon on) you should watch just the final boss battle on Youtube. It's one of Nintendo's best.

And multiplayer. I would be happy if they ported smash brothers to the switch like they did for mario kart 8 and included all the DLC.

I will play 10x times SP content on the switch vs. MP. it's mostly a travel device for me - planes, hotel rooms after work dinners, etc. I know you all love MP and Smash Bro - thats cool. But I want more content like Metroid and Golden Sun and deep stuff that isn't kiddo or too japanese ;)

I go back and forth on which I would want more, Luigi's Mansion or Metroid. Will be super excited if any are at least teased at E3.
