Mets, Blue Jays among teams at Doug Fister showcase

Fister has thrown for five teams in recent weeks and could sign soon, per a major-league source.

Free-agent right-hander Doug Fister threw for four interested clubs in California on Thursday, a major-league source told SB Nation. The Mets, Blue Jays, Diamondbacks and Angels were all in attendance.

Fister, who is arguably the top free agent available after going unsigned during the winter, also threw for the Giants recently in the wake of Madison Bumgarner’s shoulder injury. Fister appears likely to land a major-league deal at this point, though it is unclear if a favorite has emerged.

The Mets would be an obvious fit due to the team’s many rotation woes, as starters Seth Lugo, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz are all sidelined with injuries. The Angels have Garrett Richards and Tyler Skaggs on the shelf due to injury, and the D-Backs recently lost Shelby Miller to season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Fister, 33, posted a 4.64 ERA and 5.7 K/9 for Houston last season after signing a one-year deal with the club in late January. Though he was linked to a few clubs this winter, no deal materialized and he remains a free agent well into the season.
