Pilot Error: NBC Passes on 3 Comedies, Including What About Barb?

'What About Barb?' Pilot at NBC Cancelled

NBC has begun thinning the 2017-18 pilot herd.

TVLine has learned that three comedy projects — Bill Lawrence’s Spaced Out, film-to-TV remake What About Barb? and Max Mutchnick’s sibling sitcom Relatively Happy — will not be ordered to series.

Scroll down to refresh your memory about the ill-fated trio (and head here to see what remains in contention):

SPACED OUT
WRITER: Adam Sztykiel
OTHER EPs: Bill Lawrence, Jeff Ingold
CAST: Matt Shively (The Real O’Neals), Christine Woods (Hello Ladies), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly), Brett Goldstein, Ken Kirby
A single-cam workplace comedy that centers on a working class genius and his struggles to fit in with an established team all made more difficult when their job is building a rocket to Mars.

WHAT ABOUT BARB?
WRITERS: Joe Port, Joe Wiseman
CAST: Leah Remini (King of Queens), Jessica Gunning (Prime Suspect), Ben Lawson (The Deep End), Eddie Shin (Man in the High Castle)
Based on the 1991 movie What About Bob? — but with a female twist — a psychotherapist tries to cut ties with her most overbearing patient but is unsuccessful and gains an annoying family member in the process.

RELATIVELY HAPPY (fka Happy Peppers)
WRITERS: Max Mutchnick, Jeff Astrof
CAST: Genevieve Angelson (Good Girls Revolt), Jon Rudnitsky (Saturday Night Live), Jane Lynch (Glee), Diona Reasonover (Clipped), Derek Gaines
In the multi-cam comedy, an adult brother and sister wind up living together for the first time since they were kids, after one of them suffers a big loss. They become each other’s wingmen, shoulder to cry on, best friend and punching bag as they navigate love, loss and work while helping to get each other “un-stuck.”
