IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,180, dated June 25, 1878; application filed March 9, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DE WITT O. FARRING- TON, of Lowell, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridge Holders; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1. is an oblique view of my improved cartridge-holder. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, and Fig. 3 shows the improved holder filled with cartridges.

My invention relates to an improvement in holders or receptacles for cartridges; and it consists of a strip of metal or any other suitable material provided With end detents and with lateral grooves for receiving and holding a series of cartridges, the grooves being so constructed and arranged as to hold the cartridges by the flanges upon their heads, and yet permit their free movement along the grooves longitudinally of the holder.

The object of this invention is to produce a strong and reliable holder or receptacle for cartridges, in which they can be safely packed for transportation, and in which the primers will be protected from blows or friction, and, also, a holder from which the cartridges can be readily transferred in a body to the magazine or hopper of a machine or magazine-gun, or from which, if desired, they may be taken by hand singly and fed to any kind of a firearm.

The construction of the device will be fully understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawings.

As here shown, the lateral grooves are formed by turning over the edges of the strip of metal which constitutes the holder. Manifestly, they might also be formed by flanges or projections of any suitable shape; and, if desired, two or more of these holders may be arranged side by side, thus forming a structure containing a corresponding number of rows or series of cartridges.

For retaining the cartridges in the holder, the ends of the latter may be turned down, as shown at A, Fig. 3 but I do not wish to confine myself to this particular device for this purpose.

The grooves, it will be observed, run through the holder continuous from end to end.

By attaching loops or rings to the holder, as shown at B B, Fig. 3 of the drawings, it may be suspended from the person, so as to permit the easy removal of the cartridges as required for use.

The invention of O. Howlett, as set forth in Letters Patent granted him May 28, 1867, is not herein claimed.

-VVhat is claimed as new is A cartridge-holder provided with lateral grooves and end detents, the parts being constructed and arranged to hold a series of cartridges and to permit them to be moved longitudinally, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
