Finding a swimsuit that makes a statement and actually looks flattering is one thing. But you're only halfway there. Even if your style's next-level chic, fabric that's pilling or faded is not ideal when you hit the beach. Since we're pretty sure you want to be the girl with the cool suit that appears to be in mint condition, we tapped J.Crew swimwear designer Amy Romanowsky for a few quick tips. As it turns out, it takes some effort to prolong the life of your bikini or one-piece. But when you find one you really love that you plan to wear forever, maintaining its saturation and silhouette is key. Read on to find out how it's done.

Care For the Fabric of Your Suit

"[At J.Crew], we spend weeks putting all of our swim through rigorous hands-on testing (dunking in saltwater and chlorinated water and hours of UV exposure) so they’ll last for Summers to come. But it is also important to care for your swimsuits by always handwashing them."

Always Use the Air-Dry Method

Whether you hang it on a line outside or on the drying rack, "NEVER throw your swimsuit in the dryer — always air-dry."

Prolong the Life of Your Suit While You Wear It

"Be cautious of the surfaces you sit on while wearing your swimsuit, as they can aggravate the fabric and cause pilling."

A Luxe, Quality Swimsuit Is Worth It

"The fabric and fit of the garment is what really differentiates itself from other [cheaper styles]. It takes weeks and weeks of fittings and lots of hands-on testing (even in our own showers at home) until each style is just right."

Sometimes, You Really Have to Let It Go

"You know it’s time to let go of a swimsuit (even if it’s a favorite . . . ) if the elastic or rubber starts to give or if there is sheerness or pilling. But if you take good care of it, hopefully that will never be an issue."
