NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro topped the Sports Emmys on Tuesday night, with four awards.
The network earned statuettes in the categories of outstanding trans-media sports coverage, outstanding technical team remote, outstanding studio design/art direction and outstanding studio show in Spanish.
Winning two awards apiece were Fox Sports Media Group’s coverage of Super Bowl LI (best production design/art direction and best sound FX) and MLB on Fox (best studio show, limited run and best live event audio/sound), along with HBO’s Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel (best sports news anthology and best sports journalism).
Meanwhile, Fox’s coverage of the World Series was named outstanding live sports special, while NBC’s Sunday Night Football was recognized as best live sports series. Fox also landed a win for best playoff coverage for its NFC divisional playoff coverage.
The winners in the outstanding sports personality categories were Bob Costas (best studio host), Don Emrick (play-by-play), Charles Barkley (studio analyst), Bill Raftery (sports event analyst) and the late Craig Sager (sports reporter).
Overall, Fox and its sister networks took home the most awards, with 18, followed by NBCUniversal’s networks with 15 combined. Turner Sports scored nine awards, with ESPN taking seven and HBO Sports earning five.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences handed out awards in a total of 41 categories at the ceremony, which took place at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall. Additionally, Brent Musberger was honored with the lifetime achievement award.
