Disney has been creeping towards more prominent LGBT representation this year. First there were the same-sex kisses in Star vs the Forces of Evil, then Beauty and the Beast's 'gay moment' – and now it looks like Marvel might be coming on board.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 director James Gunn has hinted that the next MCU movie might feature an LGBTQ protagonist.

When asked if he had considered featuring a gay hero in the sequel, he told PA: "Absolutely. I would love to be able to.

"We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think."

We doubt that Drax or Star-Lord will be coming out in Guardians 2. If we were the guessing sort, we would predict that it will be one of the female stars – Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), or perhaps even Gamora (Zoe Saldana).

Although we'd quite like to see Michael Rooker's rangy outlaw Yondu introduce the gang to his hot alien husband.

It's worth noting that Sylvester Stallone's almost-officially-confirmed character has a decidedly queer comic book past, too.

Recently, the Power Rangers reboot movie also suggested that the Yellow Ranger might not be heterosexual, although it did attract some accusations of tokenism.

Equally, Beauty and the Beast's much hyped outing of LeFou wasn't exactly a win for progressive representation of LGBTQ characters.

Maybe Gunn will succeed where those others have stumbled, and do something to correct Marvel Studios' diversity problem while he's at it.

Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Gunn and Kurt Russell will also star in the movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be released on April 28 in the UK and May 5 in the US.
