Stardock CEO: We Probably Won’t Be Supporting Switch But It Doesn’t Need third Party Support To Succeed

Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock, has talked about whether or not the company will be supporting the Nintendo Switch. This is what he's stated regarding the matter:

“No, [we] probably [will] not [support the Switch]. It’s too different than any of the others, and there isn’t a lot of- I haven’t seen a lot of third party success stories on the more recent Nintendo hardware. Nintendo, is a great market for Nintendo, but I haven’t seen a lot of huge hits made by non Nintendo studios.”

However, he also has this to say about Nintendo not needing Third Party Support:

“Nintendo doesn’t arguably need third party,” Wardell said. “You think about the Mario games, Zelda, I mean, there’s plenty there. I mean, if it was a $1000 game system, maybe I’d care. But as it stands now, there is plenty to play with on the Switch, that’s just fine.”

What are your thoughts on this?

Note: I wanted to put up, the full title, but it won't fit, so I had to shorten it.

Lock if old.

Can't be third-party success stories without third-parties...

And I'm not sure the Wii U is a great indicator of anything, however a wait and see approach is fair.

EDIT: Wait, Stardock? Why WOULD they?

i think he is right historically about 3rd party success on nintendo platforms but that looks to be changing with the switch so far. for example snake pass has been close to the top of the eshop charts since it came out.

Seriously...Im shocked. Stardock makes PC strategy games those translate so well to consoles.

Most console gamers won't even know who Stardock is. Gaming Bolt searching for news.

Never even heard of Stardock. I agree though, Nintendo doesn't need their games to succeed.

Yeah, I had to Google them too. Doesn't seem like they make anything that anyone ever expected to come to switch so this seems like non-news.

Yeah, I'm sure the SP devs are happy with how it's performing on Switch.

Aren't they a PC-only developer? I know them mostly for RTS and 4X games, not genres that get console ports anyway.

For a moment I thought "maybe Starbreeze?" but they've actually announced a game for the Switch...

Isn't this the guy who said that DX 12 would be "like putting a new GPU into the Xbox One" in terms of performance benefit? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure he said something like that. Given that, I'm inclined to not listen to him.

They make Galciv, Political Machine and Fallen Enchantress games. Galciv 2 is their claim to fame as it was an amazing game, Galciv 3 failed to reignite the hype of the second game but apparently sold well enough and fans like it.

They don't make console games so i'm not sure this deserved a thread. Their speciality is 4x games which have had very little success on console.

Maker of complex strictly PC games does not have plans to support small tablet-style game system (or any other home console)

Have they ever made a console game? I only know them for their PC games (Sins) and their Windows customization software.

A) Stardock doesn't make console games, so I am not surprised.

B) Brad Wardell is a GamerGater, so I am kinda glad he won't be on the Switch.

Do they even support the other consoles? Pretty sure they only do PC games.
Nintendo fans are screaming towards all developers worldwide... Haven't you seen the million topics by the fans?

If it is a developer or has an engine or other gaming related stuff you can wait for a nintendofan asking for support.

But... I do think something is going on. E3 better deliver the support... otherwise I'm inclined to say somebody fucked up on other grounds. If a console seems to be succesful but isn't getting any support.. that's weird right?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
For some reason..this doesnt seem newsworthy to me. Thats pretty much the Status Quo right ?

Not if it's only been available for two months.

Yea, not heard of any of those games so I can understand why he probably thinks it's a bad idea not to support Switch. Seems like a non-story to me.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
When I see Stardock's name attached to a game on Steam I always double back to make sure the name is correct. To me they're still the company who made all that windows customization software. Switch could use some themes though.

Sins of a Solar Empire is a cool game.

They didn't create it and only published it, same with Demigod.

People are getting really defensive and malicious about this due to the way the OP has framed it but it doesn't sound like that at all. He was asked a question and he is answering as a PC focused company.

Do they even make any console games for any system? Aren't they just a PC dev?

They're a PC Publisher only.

I'm pretty sure Stardock has been only PC, so I haven't seen them support other consoles either.

They don't support PS4 or XB1 either so this is a non-story
Star Control: Origins is supposed to be release on PS4 and XB1.
