Fresh subjects requested for exciting new opportunity
Tumblr Labs seeks additional volunteers to undergo new, non-invasive experiments on Android. To participate, go to Labs settings on your Android device and flip the switch ON. (Web-based subjects apply here.)
Exposure to the following experiments falls within acceptable limits:
- Doodle Posts by @vanillaburritos: Enables a new kind of post you can draw on with your finger.
- Sticky Audio Player by @bitterorca and @brendanp: Docks audio posts to your dash so you can play them and scroll.
- Tap to Play GIFs by @vanillaburritos: Keeps gifs in a Schrodinger state until you tap them into life so they don’t bog down your phone’s memory.
Qualifications
- Android machine with the latest Tumblr update.
- Tolerance to extreme euphoria.
Standard disclaimer: Tumblr Labs are experimental features that were designed and developed in someone’s spare time. Labs experiments are not guaranteed to work the first time or any time. Labs experiments may abruptly and unexpectedly cease functioning, or disappear altogether. Real features are not regularly tested for compatibility with Labs experiments. To disable a Tumblr Labs feature, turn the switch off. New Labs experiments will be added and old ones removed, possibly (probably) without notice. By reading this message you imply a positive predisposition towards Labs experiments as long as they last and accept that things will inevitably change as time moves on and on. Labs experiments have not been tested on live animals, your taxonomic rank notwithstanding. Please participate in Tumblr Labs only as prescribed.
Willing Participants Needed!
Tumblr Labs opens today with an exciting opportunity for healthy volunteers. Simply go to your Labs settings on the web and flip the switch ON to enroll. Choose from any of these completely safe experiments:
- Themed Posts by @cyle: Changes the color of a post to the color of its Tumblr, turning your dashboard into a beautiful illegible rainbow.

- Queue+ by @jixson12: Fine-grained scheduling options for your queue, for more fine-grained queuing.
- Inside Tumblrs by @cyle: Helpful stuff for group blogs. Private ones will show up in your dash, and public ones can have “Members only” posts for members-only business.

Dusting off the cobwebs
Over the past couple of weeks, we have slowly rolled out a spiffy new version of Tumblr on the web. Here’s a smattering of goodies in the update:
- Dark mode is now available on the web! Along with a few other color schemes, too. Just click the silhouette figure in the upper right corner and then click “Change Palette” to cycle through all of ‘em.
- You can now view your likes page in the default view or in the new grid view.
- Same with any tagged pages. Here, try it out with the frog tag. A glorious grid.
- Copying the link to a post, reporting a post, or blocking someone whose content you don’t enjoy is easier than ever. Just click the meatballs menu (●●●) in the upper right corner.
Some of these visual changes are obvious, but the biggest transformation is the one you can’t see. This wasn’t just a facelift, we completely updated the web interface. The old one was outdated—over a decade old. Adding features to it wasn’t always easy, fixing bugs wasn’t always quick. It was clear that we needed to update the whole dang thing. So update the whole dang thing we did. The result? A faster Tumblr. The experience is smoother, it’s easier to add new features, and we’re able to squash any pesky bugs quicker than before.
XKit
This kind of web interface change means that some of your Tumblr browser extensions may not work. We understand how important these extensions are to those of you who want to customize your Tumblr experience as much as possible. Throughout this process, we’ve stayed in close communication with the people over at @new-xkit-extension to make sure our update was one that they could work with. We provided them with APIs they needed to begin moving over to this new platform. This also gave us the opportunity to discuss the benefits their extension brings to the community. Having their input on what makes their service valuable to the people who use it has been a true treat, and one we are grateful for. While XKit isn’t an official Tumblr tool, it’s one we know is dear to many of you, and we don’t take that lightly. If you have any concerns, we encourage you to read more about what they have to say over here. Be sure to follow them to stay updated on their process!
We want to hear from you
Yeah, you. When we first began testing this new interface with a small selection of you, we received some really useful feedback. We want to make sure that continues, so we created a survey. While we always read the reblogs on our announcement posts, this survey is the best way to let us know exactly how you feel about this update. And don’t worry—it’s anonymous. We won’t know who you are unless you make it your business to tell us so. Head on over there and share your thoughts now.
This week’s Tumblr Tuesday adds another twist!
The Dashboard now occasionally features blogs recommended by the people you follow.
HUGE Theme Upgrades!
We just enabled a massive list of new Appearance Options for theme designers including Custom Fonts, Booleans (useful for toggling options), Custom Text (useful for enabling widgets), and Custom Images!
Some of these features are already available in Jacob Bijani’s and Peter Vidani’s themes, so try them out.
Designers - here’s a quick preview of what’s now possible:
<html> <head> <meta name="image:Background" content="https://static.tumblr.com/..."/> <meta name="image:Header" content=""/> <meta name="font:Body" content="Arial"/> <meta name="text:Flickr Username" content=""/> <style type="text/css"> body { background: #2D567C url('{image:Background}'); font: normal 14px {font:Body}; } </style> </head> <body> {block:IfHeaderImage} <img src="{image:Header}"/> {/block:IfHeaderImage}{block:IfNotHeaderImage} <h1>{title}</h1> {/block:IfNotHeaderImage}{block:IfFlickrUsername} <div id="flickr_widget"> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://flickr.com/widget?user={text:Flickr Username}"> </script> </div> {/block:IfFlickrUsername} </body> </html>
Tomorrow morning we’ll be promoting all the themes with these new options enabled, so hurry!
Announcing…
Three new features for posting from the mobile app
First, you can add images to reblogs. You asked for it, you got it.
Second, new text styles for your new text posts. Headers, lists, serifs, fancy cursive, serious typewriter. Look:
Lastly, intriguingly, you can drag paragraphs and images around to reorder them. Witness it:
Have fun with all this, Tumblr 😘

No one panic. The crabs are back. They’re helping us launch TumblrMart on web today, and will be bringing TumblrMart to Android and iOS very soon. You’re welcome.
What’s TumblrMart?
TumblrMart is your new storefront for gifting joy to your friends on Tumblr. We’re launching the mart with the ability to gift Ad-Free Browsing and this April Fools’ infamous “Summon Crab!” button, with more features to be added in the future.
You can now give someone the gift of:
- 24 hours’ worth of crustacean chaos ($2.99),
- a month of Ad-Free Browsing ($4.99), or
- a year of Ad-Free Browsing ($39.99).
You can include a little note with your present or even give anonymously—like the benevolent bestower you know you are.
How?
- Find the blog you wish to gift, OR select it from the storefront during checkout.
- You will see a small gift icon on their blog header. Click it.
- A small menu will appear with potential prezzies. Choose one.
- Enter your payment details, and hit “Pay now.”
- The lucky user receives their present.
- Celebrate. You just made someone’s dash more fun! Clack.
What else do you need to know?
- TumblrMart is not the same thing as our Tumblr Shop…
- You currently cannot buy items for yourself on TumblrMart. This is for gifting to other users only.
- Gifted Ad-Free Browsing will begin automatically for the recipient, but users must activate their crabs by clicking or tapping the “Summon Crab!” button that will become visible to them at the top of their dashboard.
- TumblrMart is available globally from today on web. A mobile release will launch soon, which means mobile users will, at long last, be able to join in with the crab infestation. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Anxious about online payment security? Check out this handy graph for total peace of mind. If you have questions, drop us a line on @wip or Support, or keep an eye out for more on @changes.
Push notifications for Android!
You pushed for it. It’s happened. Today’s Android update features push notifications, along with a newly-designed activity screen. Now you can get updates whenever someone follows your blog or interacts with your posts.
Because you’re so cool, your phone might start blowing up with notifications. To control which ones you see, go to the Account tab and tap Settings.
iOS coming very soon!
