introducing humu

We spend more time working than we do doing anything else.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, we spend 8.8 hours per day working. More than sleeping (7.8 hours). More than leisure and sports (2.6 hours). Even more than caring for others (1.2 hours).

That last one is the craziest.

We spend our lives looking for that special someone. We find them. Maybe we start a family. The most precious people on the planet for each of us. The people with whom we've chosen to spend our lives. The people to whom we dedicate our hearts and souls.

Then we spend almost 8 times as much of our precious hours at work.

Even worse, for too many people, work is just a means to an end.

Amy Wrzesniewski of Yale University told me that two-thirds of people see their work as just a job (“a necessity that’s not a major positive in their lives”) or at best a career (something to “win” or “advance”). Only about a third of people believe their work is also a calling, a source of enjoyment and fulfillment where you’re doing socially useful work.

Work should be better than that. It needs to be better than that. If we're devoting most of our lives to work, that experience should be meaningful, impactful, productive. We should be constantly learning and growing, and surrounded by people who are doing the same. We all have good days and bad days, but what would work be like if every day were like our best days? Imagine what we could achieve.

That's why Wayne Crosby and I have started humu. Our mission is to make work better everywhere through science, machine learning, and a little bit of love.

This is so true! How many of us actually find our "work" as a source of joy and contentment. Something that we work towards since childhood shouldn't end up being a "struggle" or a "race" everyday. It's got to be meaningful and should have a positive impact on oneself and others. Following to learn more.

Solving & fun! Constantly human. I’ve also been: founder, chairman, CEO, etc. Here to exchange ideas. Not prestige. Let’s be serious about work, but not take ourselves too seriously.
