For SUV and crossover fans, the New York show was a hit

This year's New York Auto Show made it quite clear that the SUV and crossover market is extraordinarily hot right now. Not only did SUVs make up a huge portion of the show's debuts, but they came in all forms. There were small ones, big ones, fast ones, and slow ones. There were even ones for camping and for carrying dogs. And you can check all of them out in this gallery.

Based on the also-new Chevrolet Traverse, the new Enclave is now bigger, but also lighter by a whole 400 pounds. Its 3.6-liter V6 gets the Enclave to 60 mph in about a second faster, and even picks up an extra 500 pounds of towing capacity. No pricing has been released yet, but it will arrive at dealers this fall. The Enclave will be the first Buick to offer the high-spec Avenir trim, too.

    Genesis GV80 concept

The next new model coming to the Genesis lineup will be an SUV, and its look is previewed by this GV80 concept. From what we've heard, it's a bit larger than a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Underneath this concept's skin is a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain. Considering Hyundai's experience with fuel-cell vehicles, it would certainly be possible for Genesis to build a production version with hydrogen power. However, we expect the road-going model to have an existing 5.0-liter V8 or twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6.

Like the Genesis GV80, the Infiniti QX80 Monograph is a preview of an upcoming model. The greenhouse of this Monograph looks quite similar to the current QX80, so we're not expecting substantial changes to the SUV's mechanicals. Among the visual changes are higher set headlights and many more vents.

For Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the New York auto show was all about performance. In addition to the absurd Challenger Demon, the company revealed the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. It builds upon the existing Grand Cherokee SRT by adding the 707-horsepower supercharged V8 from the Dodge Hellcat. That power goes to a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system. This extra-fast SUV also gets extra braking power courtesy of Brembo brakes, the front of which are the biggest fitted to any Jeep in history. Trackhawks will be arriving at dealers later this year.

It doesn't have the gull-wing doors of last year's concept, but otherwise, the 2018 Lincoln Navigator looks just like that car. It even has the slick turbine-style wheels. Most important, though, this Expedition-based SUV has an interior that is uniquely Lincoln. It features big screens for instruments and infotainment, as well as the fancy 30-way power seats from the Continental sedan. It also has a potent 450-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 behind its prodigious grille.

    2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 and GLC63 S

The smallest SUVs from Mercedes now pack AMG power. The Mercedes-AMG GLC63 and GLC63 S both come with versions of the ever-proliferating twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. In the "coupe" and SUV GLC63 bodystyles, the engine makes 469 horsepower. The GLC63 S, which is only offered in the coupe body, makes 503 horsepower. Along with the more powerful engine comes upgraded suspension and brakes. The SUVs get AMG GT-inspired styling, too, most clearly in the "Panamericana" grilles with their vertical bars.

Following up on the Nissan X-Trail Dog Edition is the Americanized Rogue Dogue. The only real difference is in the name. Otherwise, it features the same equipment, which includes a ramp, pet divider, padded cargo area, and spill-proof food and water bowls. There's even an air drier to combat wet dog smell. The whole thing is also quite reminiscent of the Honda Element Dog Friendly edition, which included many of the Rogue Dogue's features. Unfortunately for dog owners considering the Rogue, these features are not currently available.

How do you instantly make a really average car cool? You put tank treads on it. It's a proven concept that many automakers have used, and Nissan has applied it to a Rogue. Aside from the tracks and modified suspension and wheel arches, this Rogue Trail Warrior is pretty much a stock Rogue. The only other changes are a winch, roof basket with LED light bar, digital camouflage livery, and yellow-tinted headlights. Also, don't expect this to show up at dealers anytime soon.

    Subaru Ascent concept

After a long hiatus from the Tribeca, Subaru is once again tackling the medium to large SUV segment. This time, the company will use a three-row SUV by the name of Ascent. While only shown in concept form here, it isn't far from production. In fact, Subaru says the production version will be shown later this year in LA, with the crossover arriving at dealers next year. We expect it to have similar styling to this concept, along with the turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four under the hood. And being a Subaru, it will of course have all-wheel-drive.

    Toyota FT-4X concept

Among the SUV concepts shown at the New York Auto Show, it's safe to say the FT-4X was the most creative. The little soft-roader featured a chunky, tough, modern exterior with a smattering of retro details to connect it to Toyota's truck heritage. It also features clever features inside and out including removable exterior panels and a hatch that can open barn-door style, or upward like a traditional hatch. The interior features a sleeping bag in the armrest, a removable flashlight, water bottles in the door pulls, and swiveling air vents to dry off gloves and such.

There were also a couple of not-quite-SUV SUVs we wanted to include in our list here, too. The first of which is the refreshed Subaru Outback. The former lifted wagon has slowly evolved into more of a crossover, and this year it gets a wider grille, new headlights, and updated plastic cladding. Roof rails are standard across the board, as are touch screens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Outbacks also now have more safety equipment.

Honorable Mention: 2018 Buick Regal TourX

The other of our wagons with SUV ambitions is the new Buick Regal TourX. This Buick is the same as the Opel Insignia wagon sold overseas, but with black plastic body cladding, standard all-wheel-drive, and a slightly higher ride height. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Its natural competitors include the Subaru Outback featured in this list, along with the Audi Allroad and Volvo's Cross Country models. It goes on sale this fall.
