For SUV and crossover fans, the New York show was a hit
This year's New York Auto Show made it quite clear that the SUV and crossover market is extraordinarily hot right now. Not only did SUVs make up a huge portion of the show's debuts, but they came in all forms. There were small ones, big ones, fast ones, and slow ones. There were even ones for camping and for carrying dogs. And you can check all of them out in this gallery. -

Genesis GV80 concept
The next new model coming to the Genesis lineup will be an SUV, and its look is previewed by this GV80 concept. From what we've heard, it's a bit larger than a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Underneath this concept's skin is a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain. Considering Hyundai's experience with fuel-cell vehicles, it would certainly be possible for Genesis to build a production version with hydrogen power. However, we expect the road-going model to have an existing 5.0-liter V8 or twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6. -

2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 and GLC63 S
The smallest SUVs from Mercedes now pack AMG power. The Mercedes-AMG GLC63 and GLC63 S both come with versions of the ever-proliferating twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. In the "coupe" and SUV GLC63 bodystyles, the engine makes 469 horsepower. The GLC63 S, which is only offered in the coupe body, makes 503 horsepower. Along with the more powerful engine comes upgraded suspension and brakes. The SUVs get AMG GT-inspired styling, too, most clearly in the "Panamericana" grilles with their vertical bars. -

Subaru Ascent concept
After a long hiatus from the Tribeca, Subaru is once again tackling the medium to large SUV segment. This time, the company will use a three-row SUV by the name of Ascent. While only shown in concept form here, it isn't far from production. In fact, Subaru says the production version will be shown later this year in LA, with the crossover arriving at dealers next year. We expect it to have similar styling to this concept, along with the turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four under the hood. And being a Subaru, it will of course have all-wheel-drive. -

Toyota FT-4X concept
Among the SUV concepts shown at the New York Auto Show, it's safe to say the FT-4X was the most creative. The little soft-roader featured a chunky, tough, modern exterior with a smattering of retro details to connect it to Toyota's truck heritage. It also features clever features inside and out including removable exterior panels and a hatch that can open barn-door style, or upward like a traditional hatch. The interior features a sleeping bag in the armrest, a removable flashlight, water bottles in the door pulls, and swiveling air vents to dry off gloves and such. -

Honorable Mention: 2018 Buick Regal TourX
The other of our wagons with SUV ambitions is the new Buick Regal TourX. This Buick is the same as the Opel Insignia wagon sold overseas, but with black plastic body cladding, standard all-wheel-drive, and a slightly higher ride height. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Its natural competitors include the Subaru Outback featured in this list, along with the Audi Allroad and Volvo's Cross Country models. It goes on sale this fall.buick regal Information
