Koei Tecmo expects record profits next year, weighs in on sales, teases future, more

From Niko Partners industry analyst Daniel Ahmad:

  • Koei Tecmo had an increases in profit for the 7th consecutive year in a row.
  • Ni-Oh shipped 1 million in its first two weeks and was a notable highlight of this fiscal year.
  • Musou All-Stars (Koei character Dynasty Warriors like game, 130K) and Blue Reflection (Gust New IP, 80K) were below expectations.
  • They are focusing on expanding their mobile presence with games like Toukiden and that Gust magical girls game.
  • On the mobile front, Dynasty Warriors Unleashed (made by Nexon) is going very well, and had 3 million downloads as of this report along with good earnings results. The game just hit 5 million downloads today, and I believe it's not out in Japan yet.
  • Koei Tecmo expects next year to be a record revenue and profit year for the company between Dynasty Warriors 9, Fire Emblem Warriors, and some unannounced products.
  • For traditional console/PC titles, Koei Tecmo expects to ship 3.75 million units overseas (was 3.27 million) and 2.65 million domestically (was 3.06 million). This implies a strong overseas bent (including Asia), and I would say at least one more Western heavy and one more non-Japan-Asian heavy title will be announced soon given the regional breakdowns (2.2 million for US/EU, 1.07 for non-Japan Asia).
  • Koei Tecmo's motto for this fiscal year is the "creation and expansion of IPs", so expect both new IPs and fancy entries in existing ones. I guess you could read Fire Emblem as the former and Dynasty Warriors as the latter.
  • Koe Tecmo has more collaboration titles a la Fire Emblem coming this year for Japanese and Global audiences.
  • Koei Tecmo has also created a new studio brand called Midas, which is staffed by employees in their 20s and 30s, and is tasked with creating smartphones games while being afforded lots of freedom in how to go about that. Koei hasn't had a ton of success on mobile (sans the game they outsourced to Nexon), so it makes sense to let people who play mobile games give this a go.
  • There will be anniversary content for Atelier, Tecmo, and Omega Force, the last of which is Dynasty Warriors 9.
  • As reported previously, Koei Tecmo will heavily support the Switch with both lots of multiplatform games and some exclusives a la Fire Emblem.
  • Koei Tecmo is also making a VR version of Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 and some VR arcade hardware.
  • Finally, Koei Tecmo is working to avoid game delays in the future.

Tecmo is not involved with that game at all, that's Nintendo/Atlus.

Anyway, given their lofty sales expectations and them wanting to make more collaborations...maybe we'll finally get Star Wars Musou?

My suspicion is Hyrule Warriors Complete on Switch.

I really hope Gust isn't being turned into the moe-bait division of KT. They deserve better, frankly.

Interesting that Blue Reflection is below expectations, because that seems roughly in line with how the more recent Atelier games have done. Turns out moe pandering can't save your new IP, I guess?

Considering how much KT sold in overseas markets, I wonder if they'll get the message and work on better PC ports?

My suspicion is Hyrule Warriors Complete on Switch.

I'd take that anytime, loved the Wii U version. I suspect they release it as well, it's basically something people would jump at and it wouldn't cost a lot to make.

I do have the 3DS version, but I'd like a fully loaded Switch version with all DLC and content from previous games with better performances.

Ninja Gaiden Black/Ninja Gaiden 4, and tone it down on the Warriors/Musou games, goddammit.

...and you know what? I'm gonna go crazy here and ask that they bring back WinBack. Fuck it, why not?

I really hope Dynasty Warriors 9's new engine means a future of PC ports that aren't complete dog shit. Every single issue that was prevalent in their PC ports that released in 2014 were still around in Berserk/Toukiden 2's releases in 2017. They haven't improved one bit and their games don't sell on PC because of it.

I really hope they know it's because of the port quality. Not a lack of interest.

Record profits? Pokémusou confirmed.

No, but really, does anyone remember that interview where they said they'd love tackling either Mario or Pokémon for a musou? Day zero for both if they ever happen.

Quite interesting that Blue Reflection was under expectations at 80k. iirc Atelier Shallie shipped 80k across Japan/Asia and they seemed content with that (well content enough to keep plowing forward with the franchise) and it seems like fairly average sales for Gust's games these days.

Lol at Musou Stars though. Unsurprised that one bombed really.

Inb4 atelier remaster since the new games have been selling badly

You know I'd pay good money for Atelier Iris trilogy on PS4/Vita.

That reminds me, they did Pokémon Conquest. A sequel to that would be nice.

NIOH looks really interesting. Can they port it to the Switch if they wanted to?

It's not a graphically demanding title, so I'm sure they could just reduce asset quality, draw distance, and some effects and reduce to framerate to 30fps for a Switch version.

Anyway, I bet the unannounced projects are stuff like Hyrule Warriors 2 with characters from BotW, possibly Dead or Alive 6. Still, KT looks to be doing much better than Capcom is. It feels strange saying that.

I wonder why Capcom has really scaled back the number of games they release? At least it seems that way. At least Koei Tecmo releases a bunch of stuff and all over the place, too.

It's a number of things, I think. The main things are a lot of big titles like Dragon's Dogma, SFxT, RE6, DmC, Lost Planet 3 all failed on various levels in a very short time frame, coupled with a lack of mobile successes and diminishing returns in the arcade/amusements business (Capcom-owned arcades, pachislots). Capcom spent most of what MH4 made on expanding the mobile divisions, which so far hasn't resulted in much. Adding to that, lots of smaller franchises like Sengoku Basara and Ace Attorney have been doing worse on average. Then there's whatever is up with Panta Rhei and Deep Down. All of that I think has done a number on Capcom.

Blue Reflection was below expectations? Maybe it would have sold more if it wasn't a low-budget kusoge. Gotta spend money to make money, KT.

I'd totally be OK with Hyrule Warriors complete, as missed a load of new content with Legends.
They would probably announce it only a few months before its release though, I hope FE Warriors will be successful as well.

Sony published it in the West so I doubt it.

Nintendo published Ninja Gaiden on the Wii U, yet it still ended up on the 360 and PS3. We don't know the extent of the deal, but I doubt Koei wrote themselves into a corner so they couldn't port the game to another platform later.
