Shield Cockpit Protection System – Mockup 1 by Olcay Tuncay Karabulut

During Chinese Grand Prix, the FIA has showed off a new canopy style solution that could be an alternative to the Halo or the Aeroscreen. Turkish designer Olcay Tuncay Karabulut revealed his artists’ impression of what the design could look like when fitted to a generic 2018 car. The shield is not designed as an attachment around the edge of the cockpit, like Halo and Aeroscreen, this design offers more integral concept to the nose section of the car. This concept design has been proven to be more effective during early testing especially to protect driver for smaller pieces of debris, but not so much when it comes to deflect larger items such as wheels. Considered as a compromise between safety and aesthetics, the “Shield” creates a number of reactions from F1 contingent.
