Track Of The Day #1016: Stutter Steps – Submarine [PREMIERE]

Following their 2015 debut album, Stutter Steps return with a new six-song EP, Floored, on Blue Arrow Records, home of Jonathan Richman among others. We have the premiere of their new track ‘Submarine’ a warm yet wistful cut, crafted as they sped north and away from the US election carnage. Helmed by group mastermind Ben Harrison, a curator at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and collaborator with Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500/Luna/etc.) with Harrisons’ mournful tone is still clinging to hope, above driving Hammond organs and gleaming arpeggios it sounds the intersection between ‘early Flying Nun and the Go-Betweens.’  Stutter steps carve literate world-weary sound that delves into affairs of the heart and inspired by film influences:

“I often think of scenes from films that have struck me to spark lyric ideas. I guess in this case I was thinking of the infamous pool scene in “The Graduate”, where Dustin Hoffman is submerged in a diving suit for what seems an eternity, escaping the alien, unknown world of life after college.” Says Harrison, continuing “I always liked the oddly calming white noise of his breathing and the bubbling of the water. For some reason I was projecting forward, imagining him 30 years later, escaping some mid-life crisis.”
