Free concerts and more at this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival

American singer/songwriter Lady Wray performs a free concert at this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

The Vancouver International Jazz Festival has announced 150 free concerts along with headlining artists and ticketed concerts.

Among the free events is the Downtown Jazz Weekend. Typically held at Vancouver Art Gallery/Robson Square, the weekend shows will benefit from recent redesign of the north Georgia Plaza. A bigger viewing space and improved sightlines for the hot (and free) jazz action June 24-25 will draw hundreds if not thousands to outdoor concerts on the first weekend of the 11-day Vancouver International Jazz Festival (June 22 – July 2).

Performers in the free concert series include Nik West, Lady Wray, Neil Cowley Trio, and Lina Nyberg.

Swedish singer/compsoer Lina Nyberg performs at this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

In total, over 1800 artists are scheduled to perform at this year’s festival. Headliners include Seu Jorge, Branford Marsalis and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Thievery Corporation, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, Antibalas, Tommy Emmanuel, Ziggy Marley, Donny McCaslin Group, Kenny Barron and Jacob Collier.

Special programs include the returning Made in the UK Series (now in its sixth year) and the inaugural Spotlight on Italy. In addition, Frankie’s Jazz Club (755 Beatty St.; capacity, 100) hosts nightly jam sessions. For complete details and ticket info, click here.
