Fernando Mastrangelo's Escape furniture evokes landscapes through coloured gradients
Brooklyn artist and designer Fernando Mastrangelo has cast his latest collection of furniture, currently on show in New York, to look like "three-dimensional landscape paintings".
Hot off an exhibition at Spazio Rossana Orlandi during Milan design week, Mastrangelo's Escape series has gone on display at Maison Gerard in Greenwich Village.
His collection includes a coffee table, a bench, drum stools, mirrors, a desk and a bookshelf, which are all cast from layers of material.
The uneven striations are built up to resemble abstract scenes of water, hills and skies across the flat and curving surfaces of the furniture pieces.
"Each piece is like a three-dimensional landscape painting – the simple, geometric forms are seamless gradients of tones and textures," said the gallery.
Silica, hand-dyed sand and powdered glass are combined to create the effects, each bringing a different quality to the patterns.
Mastrangelo made Dezeen's list of ones to watch from New York design week last year, after showing a set of pastel-coloured furniture pieces called Fade.
The hues in the Escape series are bolder and darker, with slithers of bright blue and pink contrasted against areas of black.
Lighter tones like peach, lilac and pale blue can also be traced through the shapes, many of which feature one or more curved edges.
"Anyone familiar with Fernando's work knows that it is not defined by any particular style, but rather a language that extends into eclectic and varied works spanning art, design, and architecture," the gallery said.
"At the heart is a wild, experimental use of unusual materials to serve a conceptual component, while eliciting a 'how'd he do that' effect."
Escape is on show at Maison Gerard, 53 East 10th Street, New York, from 13 April to 5 May 2017.
Mastrangelo also is due to present new work at this year's Collective Design fair, from 3 to 7 May 2017, and Sight Unseen Offsite exhibition taking place from 19 to 22 May 2017 – both during the NYCxDesign festival.
