House Intel Committee Invites Officials To Testify On Russian Election Meddling

Capitol 042117 lt

Looking to get an investigation into Russian meddling in last year's presidential election back on track, the House Intelligence Committee has sent letters inviting Trump and Obama administration officials to testify before the committee next month.

The committee said letters were sent to FBI Director James Comey and National Security Adviser Admiral Mike Rogers inviting them to appear at a closed hearing on May 2nd

Former CIA Director John Brennan, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates were also invited to appear at an open hearing.

Yates was due to appear before the committee to testify about former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn's communications with Russian officials last month, but the hearing was canceled.

A report from the Washington Post alleged the Trump administration sought to block Yates from testifying, although the White House has denied the claim.

Earlier this month, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., stepped aside from leading the investigation amid questions about his handling of the probe.

In a statement, Nunes attributed his decision to several left-wing activist groups filing accusations against him with the Office of Congressional Ethics.

Despite calling the charges baseless, Nunes said he believed it was in the best interests of the committee to turn over leadership of the investigation to Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Tex.
