It may have felt like summer had arrived but there is a reason why the Spanish say “Hasta el 40 de Mayo, no te quites el sayo” – which translates as Don’t put away your overcoat until May 40th.

After a positively balmy Semana Santa across the Iberian peninsula, the temperatures are set to drop on Wednesday, sending us reaching for sweaters.

Spain’s meteorological agency (AEMET) issued weather warnings across 17 provinces in 10 regions on Wednesday, forecasting storms in Madrid, Force 8 winds across the southern coast and high seas in Galicia.

The provinces of Cáceres, Toledo. Ávila and Salamanca are on amber alert for hailstorms while the Balearic Islands, Murcia and Asturias as well as Barcelona and Girona are on amber alert for fierce coastal winds.
