Prince left behind an unforgettable musical legacy behind following his tragic death one year ago at the age of 57.

But aside from his own back catalogue of classics, the singer also penned a whole bunch of hits for other people – some of which you might not even realise he wrote.

Let’s remind ourselves of some of his compositions which went on to be hits for other artists – reminding us just how far-reaching his influence really was.

So how many of these did you know were written by Prince?

MANIC MONDAY – The Bangles

The girl band soared to number two in both the US and UK with this track in 1986 – which was actually written by Prince under the nom de plume Christopher.

I FEEL FOR YOU – Chaka Khan

This song originally appeared on Prince’s self-titled 1979 debut album but it was Chaka Khan’s version which topped the charts in 1984 and promptly won him a Grammy for best R&B song the following year.

NOTHING COMPARES 2 U – Sinead O’Connor

A classic number one, accompanied by a now iconic video – but it was Prince who originally wrote it, for side project The Family. Ironically this song – which topped the UK charts in 1990 – reached number one on the US Billboard charts on April 21 1990, exactly 26 years to the day before Prince’s untimely death.

HOW COME YOU DON’T CALL ME? – Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys reached number 26 in the UK charts with this track – from her album Songs In A Minor – in 2002, but it was in fact a Prince track which featured on the B-side to his classic hit 1999.

LOVE THY WILL BE DONE – Martika

Remember this? It peaked at number nine in the UK charts in 1991, and was written by both Martika (of Toy Soldiers fame) and Prince himself.

LOVE SONG – Madonna

Actually it’s fairly obvious that Prince had a hand in writing this one given he actually sings on it – but it’s such a good track it’s worthy of a mention. Features on Madonna’s classic 1989 album Like A Prayer.

STAND BACK – Stevie Nicks

This song was a big US hit for the Fleetwood Mac singer back in 1983, and it features uncredited synth backing from Prince – with Stevie inspired to write the song after she heard Little Red Corvette.

ROUND AND ROUND – Tevin Campbell

Another song which was a big hit in the US, peaking at number 12 in 1990. It also featured on the soundtrack of Prince’s movie Graffiti Bridge

PRAY – MC Hammer

OK so Prince didn’t actually write Hammer’s rap as such – but the song heavily samples his 1984 hit When Doves Cry, and was one of the first songs to feature a Prince sample that the man himself legally sanctioned. It reached number eight in the UK singles chart in 1990.
