Selena Gomez Finally Responded To The Controversy Around "13 Reasons Why"

"It's not an easy subject to talk about, but I'm very fortunate with how it's doing."

Recently, the Selena Gomez-produced Netflix hit 13 Reasons Why has come under fire for the dangers it could pose for those struggling with mental illness.

Gomez hadn't really commented on the backlash yet, only posting on Instagram when the show first premiered thanking fans for watching.

But last night, Gomez spoke with The Associated Press about the controversy.

Gomez recognized the controversy but dismissed it saying, "We stayed very true to the book and that's initially what Jay Asher created, a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story, and I think that's what we wanted to do."

She also noted that the backlash "is going to come no matter what" but noted that she is overwhelmed and very proud of the series.
