- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2017This is possibly the best all-around Android phone there's ever going to be, what with everyone (including LG) now moving to disposable closed case designs that force you to replace the phone every couple years rather than being able to expand and maintain it. The V20 has a removable battery and an SD slot, and it's potentially the last high-end Android phone that'll have both.
I bought the V20 because my Galaxy Note 4 finally croaked; it completely fried itself. That said, the Note 4 was still perfectly fine in use (and I miss the stylus) and the V20, like all new Android phones, doesn't really do a whole lot that's different. There's been a lot of stagnation in phones in general over the past few years - they're all basically just screens with a bunch of icons on them that do basically the same stuff. They were fast enough to do the tasks most people require of them years ago.
My point being, I didn't want to upgrade, and if you've got an older phone that's working fine, just keep using it. There's nothing in particular that wows me about the V20 vs. my Note 4, but since I had no choice but to replace that phone, this is easily the best choice to do so given its expandability and removable battery. It's also got a modern processor, plenty of RAM for multitasking and a second wide angle camera lens to complement the normal one, which is probably my favorite thing about the phone that I didn't have before. It's also got a reputedly amazing DAC and microphone, which I just haven't been able to try out yet. (It does have a headphone jack, btw.)
Being able to get it for so cheap was a godsend given my unplanned purchase. You can get these pretty heavily discounted now through Sprint directly, but it's still quite a bit more than buying refurbished and you're still then beholden to Sprint and whatever they want to do with your plan when you buy a new phone. I'm grandfathered on their old, old unlimited plan that's not throttled, so I was glad to be able to just keep the same plan.
My phone looks brand new; there's no real way to tell that it was used, and in fact the original plastic was still on one side of the phone. I'm not sure what these are but I don't think they're really used phones, and demos would be more beaten up too - these seem like "open box" phones or something. I will say that mine came with a USB-C cable and charger (on both ends) when I've read that the V20 normally comes with USB-A to USB-C, and a dual USB-C cable is really inconvenient because it doesn't work with much else yet. I'll need to buy at least a couple USB-A to USB-C cables for my cars.
No headphones are in the box. That's ok with me; I still have my Samsung ones that are surprisingly decent.
The one thing I don't really like about the phone itself is the screen calibration, which is way too blue, and there is no way to really fix it properly. Samsung's phones have selectable calibrations that are given dumb names but actually correspond to common industry standard calibrations ("Basic", for example, is standard SRGB). LG has a "comfort view" option that can at least warm up the colors a little, but that's not the same thing as a proper calibration. I have a calibrated PC screen and setting comfort view to "low" looks reasonably close to my PC; better than the default, at least.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2019I enjoyed this phone while I had it. It was amazing on WiFi and it worked like a beauty. Though trying to make your data work was a pain in the arse. I had to call sprint to get sim cards, and two weeks later and also 2 hour drive to a near by sprint store. To find out that my phone was defective. Due to the fact that the antenna inside the phone wasn't connecting to the towers. I loved this phone a lot, and now I know that I will buy it through the sprint store. It is an amazing phone, but if you want to buy it. Beware the risks of it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2018The last time Sprint lost its mind and offered unlimited data and calls for $25/month if you ported a number and brought your own phone (Or bought one for full price from them) I decided it was time to update my three year plus Nexus and switch from the zero cost but really limited data plan from FreedomPop and close out my ancient 2g Motorola flip phone I still used from TMobile.
I wanted something good but economical and this was right square in that sweet spot. Phone comes in a generic box and will not include a manual or any fancy accessories but it does come with the maker's battery (in mine) and had no visible evidence of use/abuse/misuse. Could have been brand new for all I could tell.
It had a clean serial number and I had no hassles with the phone in getting Sprint to activate it. (Sprint itself cannot find its rear end with both hands, a mirror and a guide dog but that had nothing to do with the phone.)
The phone has been used every day now for three months and works like a champ. The battery was and is as good as one can ask for. I rather suspect this might have been one of those 'I changed my mind" returns with minimal use.
The phone might not be a star performer compared to current flagship phones but I can buy a round trip ticket from L.A. to London for the price difference between it and an iPhone X or Galaxy Note 9 so who cares? :0
Easily removable back gives access to user replaceable battery and SIM card and SD card slots. Wide range of accessories easily available and this phone is locked to Sprint so there should be no hassles in activation when dealing with someone on their phone set-up who has the tech savvy of a radish (and similar English language competence).
Note: Find a corporate Sprint store to get activation, the people on the phone system are friendly but absolutely useless and seem to have wandered in off the street and answered a ringing phone at random.
Good solid phone at a tremendous cost saving over a new one.
Second Note: This model is *only* for Sprint.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2017This phone is horrible waited for a sim card then once arrived my time is up to return the phone. If you take a picture the phone randomly powers down and drains your battery to zero. The phone prior to the picture is normally at full battery. tried this morning after charging all night. one picture back to the charger. DUD phone. I would NOT purchase.
