Medtronic recalls devices used to manage fluid build-up in the brain

The medical company behind a device used to control fluid build-up in the brain has issued a recall after receiving several complaints about potential under-drainage. Medtronic Plc, which produces StrataMR, said affected devices were manufactured between Oct. 27, 2015 and Nov. 11, 2016.

The product’s adjustable valves and shunts are used in patients diagnosed with “water on the brain,” or hydrocephalus. The condition occurs when there’s an excess buildup of cerebrospinal fluid, which protects the brain inside of the skull.

The company said the potential issue occurred after the device was implanted in patients, Reuters reported.
