Five years ago Jana and her husband bought a property containing three little houses with plans of turning them into one big home for their family. But then their architect told them that the buildings were in no condition to be saved, so the way forward was to tear them down and start building from scratch.

They moved in with the few pieces of furniture they had while the construction was being finished and started the search for items with a rustic, lived-in look. They visited flea markets, scoured auction websites and bought things from friends that were downsizing.

The open plan accommodates all of their needs: The kids can play or do their homework while Jana blogs from the kitchen island. If they need more privacy, the space can be divided with super tall, very dramatic sliding barn doors. The result is a smart, modern home with a versatile floor plan designed to be very comfortable for family living.

Our Style: Industrial, but in a warm way. We like the contrast of formal and informal, vintage and new, everything together.

Inspiration: We draw inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest mainly.

Favorite Element: The Chesterfield sofa; it’s something that I’ve wanted for ages!

Biggest Challenge: Finishing the upstairs bedrooms; we had some issues with construction and we’re waiting to solve them before moving on to the decorating stage.

What Friends Say: They like the amount of natural light provided by the huge windows. Also many people ask if it’s a recycled building, given the rustic style of the construction and the way we furnished it.

Biggest Embarrassment: The constant mess in my studio/workshop! With all the fabrics and DIY materials…I knew it would happen so we built a separate room for all of it.

Proudest DIY: It has to be the floors. Our contractor gave us the flooring wood for free, but it was cheaply finished and started to show its wear very soon. We didn’t like the dark stain that it had, so we ended up refinishing it ourselves with the lighter patina that you can see now.

Biggest Indulgence: The leather Chesterfield sofa. It’s the latest addition to the living room; I love the grown-up look it gave to the space.

Best Advice: Be personal, and search for things that relate to your story. I have this idea that finding items that remind me of something I had can help me keep those memories alive, even though they’re not the original thing. Sort of like the stand-ins that they use in Hollywood, in a decoration form.
