The PlayStation 3 has now sold 80 million units worldwide.

Sony announced the new milestone today, which the company said it reached on November 2, 2013.

The PlayStation 3 was first released in Japan and North America in November 2006, with a European release following in March 2007.

Alongside the announcement, Sony emphasised that 300 games will be released for the PlayStation 3 this holiday season across boxed physical release and digital downloads. Those will join the 4,332 games that have already been released for the platform, Sony adds.

The company singled out Naughty Dog's The Last of Us for particular praise, which sold 3.4 million copies worldwide in its first three weeks on sale.

Microsoft last month announced that the Xbox 360 had also crossed 80 million sales, although the Xbox 360 first went on sale a year earlier in November 2005.

The Wii, meanwhile, has sold 100 million units since its launch in 2006.

Sony's next home console, the PlayStation 4, will be released on November 15 in North America and November 29 in Europe.
