uTorrent displays sponsored advertisements in the free version of its torrent application. These ads help keep uTorrent free but can bog down slower computers. While you may know that you can pay to upgrade uTorrent to an ad-free version, you may not realize that ads can easily be disabled in the Preferences menu. This wikiHow teaches you how to disable ads in uTorrent by adjusting some settings, as well as how to upgrade to an ad-free version of uTorrent.

Method 1 of 2:

Disabling Ads in Preferences

  1. It has a green icon with a white "u." While the free version of uTorrent displays ads by default, you can disable these ads in the Preferences menu.
    • uTorrent ads ensure that the developer can provide a free version of the program without losing money. If you like uTorrent and want to thank the developers, you may consider upgrading to the ad-free version. It costs $4.95 per year.
    • The free version of uTorrent will always have a few links from the company that owns uTorrent listed in the menu panel to the left. There is no way to get rid of these. If you do not click on them, they will not display any ads.
  2. It's the second option in the menu bar at the top. This displays a drop-down menu.

  3. It's the second option in the Options menu.
  4. It's the last option in the list on the left side of the Preferences menu.
  5. It's in the long list in the box on the Advanced menu under Preferences. You can find this option in one of two ways:
    • Type "gui.show_plus_upsell" into the field next to "Filter" in the upper-right corner. Select this option from the search results.
    • Scroll down the list of options in the Advanced menu until you find "gui.show_plus_upsell." The options are listed in alphabetical order,
  6. When you clicked “gui.show_plus_upsell”, two radio buttons labeled with “True” and “False” appeared next to "Value" below the box with all the advanced options. Clicking the button next to “False” will disable the ad at the bottom left corner of uTorrent.
    • Be sure you don't accidentally select the wrong option and set it to "False." Making changes to the wrong options may make uTorrent not work properly.
  7. It's in the list of options in the Advanced menu. Just like with the previous option, you can find it using the "Filter" search field or by searching all the advanced options alphabetically.
  8. Click the radio option next to "Value" to disable the option.
  9. Now you will need to locate and select all of the options listed below and set their values to “False." These are all listed in the box in the Advanced Options menu. Some may already be set to "False," but check to be sure. If they are not set to false, click the option and then select False next to "Value.". The following options need to be set to "False:"
    • offers.left_rail_offer_enabled
    • offers.sponsored_torrent_offer_enabled
    • gui.show_notorrents_node
    • offers.content_offer_autoexec
    • bt.enable_pulse
  10. This saves the changes you have made.
    • Note that if you did not find one (or more) of the above options in Advanced Options, don’t panic—uTorrent sometimes changes the names of these options. Return to the Advanced Options screen and type “offer” into the “Filter” field. Now, change all of those currently set to “True” to “False”.
  11. To make sure all of your changes take effect, restart uTorrent. Use the following steps to close uTorrent:
    • Click File.
    • Click Exit.
  12. Ads should be disabled. However, there will be a few links from the company that owns uTorrent (Tron) in the menu bar to the left. You will not see any ads from these sponsors as long as you do not click those ads.

Tips

  • You cannot use the Windows uTorrent Pro license on the Ad-Free version for Mac.
  • If you use private torrent sites that are known to be strict about the torrent clients they allow, consider disabling "Automatically Install Updates" under "General" in the "Preferences" menu. If uTorrent automatically updates to a version that isn’t yet allowed by your private torrent site, you will not be able to download anything new until the new version has been added.
  • Be careful when modifying the advanced options in uTorrent. Modifying the wrong options can result in problems with the application.
