In the exclusive town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, where the sweetest smiles hide the darkest secrets, four pretty little liars--Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna--have been very bad girls. . . .

Spencer stole her sister's boyfriend. Aria is brokenhearted over her English teacher. Emily likes her new friend Maya . . . as much more than a friend. And Hanna's obsession with looking flawless is literally making her sick. But the most horrible secret of all is something so scandalous it could destroy their perfect little lives.

And someone named "A" is threatening to do just that.

At first they thought A was Alison, their friend who vanished three years ago . . . but then Alison turned up dead. So could A be Melissa, Spencer's ultracompetitive sister? Or Maya, who wants Emily all to herself? What about Toby, the mysterious guy who left town right after Alison went missing?

One thing's for certain: A's got the dirt to bury them all alive, and with every crumpled note, wicked IM, and vindictive text message A sends, the girls get a little closer to losing it all.

Back to the adventures of our four barely differentiated heroines: “intellectual” hipster Aria, sporty closet-lesbian Emily, insecure fat-girl-turned bulimic Hanna and competitive bore Spencer. Still all with the same self-obsessed and image conscious internal voice, still preoccupied with sex and shopping.

First of all we find out the details of the mysterious “Jenna Thing”, a shadowy accident that the previous book skirted around for some time. It turns out to be kinda stupid, but at least it’s out of the way. Sadly the secret of Jenna’s brother Toby’s blackmail-worthy disgusting action is still undisclosed. It had better be good to be worth the wait, and not the totally obvious thing I think it is.

Then on to the main body of the story. Hanna’s self-loathing manifests itself in TV-friendly dramatic ways like hallucinations of skin disease and ugly braces when she glances into the mirror. Nobody notices this. Instead her parents oblige her to work at a burns clinic owned by the father of the boy whose car she crashed whilst drink-driving, as some form of restitution. Other people have their community service and compensation arranged by the courts and put on record, but the rich handle their own legal affair. Meanwhile Emily continues to tiresomely deny her lesbianism, despite the continual efforts of the girl she is in love with, who pops up regularly at various locations to attempt sexual relations and/or invite her to parties. At no point does she consider the feelings of this girl as she veers between interest and running away without explanation. Aria’s father turns out to still be having the affair with his student which he broke off 3½ years ago to move to Iceland. Although since every single character’s life seems to have been on hold since Alison’s death, waiting for this book series to begin, I suppose it’s not too surprising his girlfriend hasn’t moved on. And Spencer’s parents continue to facilitate their daughters’ sibling rivalry by behaving like a pair of babies, taking sides and ignoring Spencer during and after the funeral of her best friend. Whilst all this is happening we are obliged to hear all four girls’ directionless worryings about the mystery blackmailer, each which is identical to the last.

Luckily Hanna is working at the least secure hospital ever, and therefore gets the opportunity to steal unguarded and valuable medication roughly 5 minutes after she arrives. Does this come back later to bite her? Yes, indeed it does. Meanwhile Aria and her brother panic childishly about the idea that their parents might get a divorce and inconvenience them, Spencer’s pathetically petty parents drive her into the arms of creepy Wren and his “sexy British accent” (not sure which British accent this is, but since he went to Oxford I’m going to guess at “constipated posh”) and she has sex with him to a soundtrack of children’s cartoons, Emily fails to quit her swimming team, which is obviously enthralling, and Shepard continues to misuse the term “ironic” and its derivatives. Everyone suddenly seems to spend a lot of time fainting and having panic attacks, and Toby is everywhere in a potentially creepy but actually dull way, impressing Emily with his deep conversation about how the people at school who seem flawless (Like the book title! Such interconnections!) probably have problems too.

As nothing much continues to happen it becomes increasingly difficult to tell the difference between the various girls and the various boys they get involved with, particularly since 50%-75% of the main characters are dating one person as a screen whilst being more interested in another. Nothing much happens other than Spencer’s academic ability being driven out of her head by her contact with a male. Although since she had “My Humps” by the Black Eyed Peas as her ringtone in order to be ironic, she was probably never as clever as she thought she was. Hanna is blackmailed into vaguely embarrassing herself in front of some girls she hardly knows by the mysterious A, even though not one of A’s threats so far has come to anything. Aria drunkenly threatens the girl her father is shagging, rather than speaking to her father or mother about the matter. Everyone continues to be surprised that the discovery of a teenage girl’s body buried in her own garden is being investigated as murder. Most appallingly of all, all the characters feel the need to mention “Foxy” up to 3 times per page, every page. This cutesy moniker actually refers to a charity ball in aid of the Rosewood Foxhunting League, which no one seems to have a moral objection to. In fact, “It’s so big, some girls get plastic surgery for it.” This lack of dissent from the entire community, including the local media, seems odd given that the local yoga studio is surrounded by cars covered in “MEAT IS MURDER” and “PETA” stickers.

Most Specific Theme for a Hotel Bedroom

Most Pathetic Example of an Enigma
[it had] just become one of those life mysteries they’d never understand, like why Brad and Jen really got divorced.”

Leaving aside how vacuous and unimportant this subject is, it’s not even mysterious. I’m not an expert on these matters, but I’m fairly sure it’s common knowledge that they got divorced because he was shagging Angelina Jolie. So this reference doesn’t even make any sense. Most Reductive Summary of a Philosophical and Artistic Concept
“It was surreal to see them again. And not the cool, Zac-Posen-kaleidoscopic-dress sort of surreal”

I must admit that I have no idea what a Zac Posen kaleidoscopic dress is. But I know what it’s not. It’s not surreal. There again, to be fair, meeting your stepmother and stepsister who you haven’t seen for a little while, as in the context of this remark, is nowhere near surreal either. To be honest, I’m not sure why Surrealism was even brought up.

Most Disturbing Concept
“Kate probably thought they shared some sort of cute-girl bond.”

No idea what a “cute-girl bond” is. Although in fairness there is no reason that I would.

Throughout it all everyone has a massive sense of entitlement, constantly descending into sulks and histrionics for such reasons as “I touched that boy once, you can’t have him”, “That’s my dad, no one else is allowed to marry him” and “I own that dress, you can’t buy one in a different colour”. This is coupled with a plethora of “problems” that really shouldn’t be dignified with a moment’s thought, a such as “I fancy this gorgeous boy and he fancies me, but will he be put off by my almost insurmountable family baggage, which amounts to my dad quietly having an affair?”. Am I really supposed to feel concern?

The book concludes with many chapters of the girls separately deciding that Toby is both the blackmailer and the murder, for the reason that they are all stupid. He isn’t, then he kills himself. His mystery blackmailable offence is then revealed, and indeed turns out to be exactly what I thought it was. Meanwhile no one learns anything about ‘A’ whatsoever, leaving us back where we started in time for book three.

Flawless (Pretty Little Liars, #2), Sara Shepard

Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Aria Montgomery, and Emily Fields continue to receive text messages from an unknown person, "A", and are more desperate than ever to discover the identity of "A", who is still taunting them with the threat of exposing their many secrets. At first the girls think "A" is Alison, because she is the only person who knew their secrets, but then they start to believe the person behind the threats is Toby, because some messages they receive refer to 'The Jenna Thing' and with Alison dead, he is the only other person who was a part of the incident, although everyone but Spencer is unaware of why he took the blame for what happened to Jenna.
"The Jenna Thing" is revealed to be an incident in which Ali had set off a firework in Jenna Cavanaugh's step-brother Toby's tree-house to get revenge after Toby spied on the Liars changing, only to see the tree-house burst into flames, not knowing that Jenna was inside, and due to that, Jenna was permanently blinded. Toby was framed for the fire by Alison.

"A" sends Emily a text message hinting that "A" knows about Emily and Maya's romantic relationship and threatens to tell everyone about it. Emily becomes close with Toby and goes to a big benefit party with him but then later tells him that she thinks she might be gay.

"A" leaves a note for Hanna that forces her to tell Naomi and Riley that she makes herself throw up and that Sean was the one who broke up with her. Later on, she receives a text that tells her Sean is at Foxy with another girl. Hanna is shocked to discover her former boyfriend Sean Ackard ignoring his Virginity Club vows and nearly having sex with Aria.

"A" continuously tells Aria to either 'get rid of the problem' or to tell her mom the truth about Byron, her father, that he is seeing another woman. Aria goes to confront the other woman, Meredith, but when she does Meredith tells her that she and Aria's father are in love. Ella finds out that Byron is having an affair with a student named Meredith Gates and kicks him out, leaving Ella and Aria's mother-daughter relationship shattered.

Spencer continues to date with her sister Melissa's now ex-boyfriend Wren and loses her virginity to him. However, Melissa starts to hook-up with him as well and eventually makes sure that he will be out of both of their lives for good.

Emily blames herself for Toby's suicide. In this book it is revealed that Toby was forcing himself on Jenna when they were in middle school and Ali and Spencer were the only ones who knew about it, which is how Alison forced Toby to take the blame.

"An eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind."
-Gandhi

The second book to the Pretty Little Liars series, Flawless, we're back and we're following the lives of the four reunited friends - Emily, Aria, Hanna and Spencer. Three years ago, their best friend disappeared without a trace and was never found - until now. Alison’s body was discovered in her old backyard, but the question is, who was the one to put her there?

While the police open the murder investigation for the second time and hope to have more luck, the girls are made to go through the tough process and the loss of their best friend all over again. You think seeing it plastered all over the TV and reliving the moments of their friend, the late Alison DiLaurentis, is enough to worry about but all of the girls are still being harassed by the mysterious -A. The threatening anonymous messages aren't letting down and could unravel the lives of the girls at any moment - one by one. Making them admit their deep dark secrets or spilling the secrets for them.

A bitter breakup takes place after Emily’s boyfriend witnesses a same sex smooch between her and her new friend Maya. Emily can't deny the sparks that fly between them and the way Maya makes her feel but is too scared to travel down the lesbian road because of what her friends and family might think or say about her. Trying to keep her mind off Maya and convince herself out of the inevitable, she turns to a blast from the past.

Some relationships come to halt in Aria's life, thanks to -A. The first is the marriage that ties her family together after her Mother is let in on a little secret that Aria has been keeping quiet for her father - an affair with one of his students. The second is the forbidden romance between herself and her hunky English teacher, Ezra, after he thinks she is talking openly about their relationship.

Everything seems to be crumbling away for poor Hanna. Her life is spiraling out of her control and she can't seem to get a grip on it. Newly single, getting caught stealing, a DUI and just when she thinks she might be getting her father back in her life, her ugly (on the inside) step-sister makes sure that it's never going to happen with her manipulative ways.

Who was caught with their hand in the cookie jar? Spencer was. She covets her sister's boyfriend behind her back and gets caught red handed. After her perfect older sister runs to tell the family, they pretend like Spencer doesn't exist at all and forbid her to see Wren ever again. Will she listen? Of course not, she is young and in love. In the end, will things work out like the fairy tale Spencer had imagined?

Like I said in my review for the first book in the series, it's a fun and light read to pick up. I had it glued to my hands the first time I read it because it just sucked me in with all the drama and mystery. I like that the girls deal with real problems like relationships, family issues and sexual orientation. The only thing I didn't like is that the girls aren't open about what -A says to each of them and what their own secrets are. I don't know why, but it just irks me to hell. So all in all, I really love this series but if you're not into drama filled YA series for teen girls then this isn't the book for you.

Next book is Perfect.

Well, I didn't like this book as much as the first one. I also have to admit I'm liking the TV series a little more and it kills me to say that because I'm sure TV will one day eat my brain (if it hasn't already).

I just couldn't ignore some of my complaints about the series this time around. I mean, the mystery part of it is still really really good. I have absolutely no flippin' clue about what will happen next. But I'm not liking the girls as much. Is it me, or are they becoming even more air-headed and flippant?

It just annoys me when Shepard goes into insignificant detail about clothing, throwing out brand names left and right. I have nothing against brand names, but that is only because I have zero to none knowledge about them. I do not know the difference between Gucci and Prada and Marc Jacobs, and I have no idea what Chanel Number 5 smells like. So please stop reminding me that I am poor and fashion-ignorant, Ms. Shepard, if you'd be so kind.

It's also hard for me to believe what these girls supposedly did in 7th grade. I probably still ate glue in 7th grade (exaggerating, but you get my point). I don't do the stuff they did when they were 11 now, and I'm a senior in high school. Well, this might be because of my limited social life, or it could be that Ms. Shepard wants these girls to appear overly glamorous. But alas, maybe that really is how the other half lives....

Despite my personal qualms, this series is like a big greasy bag of chips. Even though you know they are bad for you, you can't have just one. (or two....or three....or eight)

You are probably thinking - what are you doing giving this book 4 stars, when you've been giving 3 stars to way better books left and right.

Let me explain:
- As I've admitted earlier - this is my guilty pleasure read.
- Yes, the writing is bad (although it has improved greatly from the 1st book).
- Yes, the dialog is patchy and undeveloped at times.
- Yes, the topic is silly and ridiculous.
- But, it totally held my interest and I couldn't put it down! I loved all of the twists and turns.

I started reading these series because I was nostalgic for some PPL, but didn't want to rewatch the whole show. The book two is totally different from the show and I am very interested which way it goes.

Flawless by Sara Shepard

There's really not much I can say about this book, having already seen the TV-Show, nothing was a big surprise, but I still really enjoyed it because I just love Sara Shepard's writing!

In this book we had the big 'Foxy' benefit dance, which was kind of like homecoming (I think it was homecoming, anyway) in the TV-Show.

I can't wait to see what happens in the next books, and I'm really hoping for a lot more character development, and a larger development between the 4 girls and their friendship with one another.

Hi, Are you a teenage girl? Then rush out and buy this steaming pile of crap. Are you a fan of the TV Series and not a teen girl? You'll most likely hate this novel as well. While the show took the basic premise and made it good, it's clear why this series never really took off until after the show came out.

None of the characters have a single redeeming quality to them. Yes, they come off as having multiple layers but in the end they are just as shallow as any real life pretty girl. I also feel offended by the lesbian stuff in this series. The Show, which is on ABC Family, handles it much better without seeming to put it down like the novel does, more so this book than the first.

I also dislike how disjointed the book feels. None of these girls talk to each other, they seemingly hate each other and there seems to be no real reason. What I find amusing if the first book ends with them coming together as a group but this one quickly tossed that idea out the window within the first 20 or so pages.

Sadly I've become invested in this crap series and need to see where it goes. It's clear the tv show is going a slightly different route which is good because these are some poorly written trash.

I'm really gutted by how disappointing this book was for me; especially considering how amazing I thought the TV series adaptation is.

The book tried too hard to emphasize the glamour and high sophistication of Rosewood and everyone who lived in it, that it became so superficial, and the characters unlikeable - they were portrayed as being somewhat vapid and shallow - especially Hanna and Spencer, two of the most sharp-witted girls of the group with very strong personalities on the show. The fact that the book also frequently focused on the high-society vibe also weakened the mystery and thrill of A and his/her threats, which makes the story rather lacking, since those aspects were the only things that separated this plot from countless others in YA fiction.

The way the story was written was annoyingly juvenile, like it was meant for young tweens of maybe twelve and under, even though the nature of the content proved otherwise.

I thought the general plot and idea of the story is ingenuously amazing and brilliant, but the poor prose took so much away from that.

Overall, it wasn't that bad - I didn't necessarily hate it, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Warnings are the same as the first book: Homophobia, OCD, Bullying, Sexual Assault, Eating Disorders.

Ok... so I did like this book better than the first one. That’s not saying much but it’s definitely an upgrade in my humble opinion. That is why I gave this book a three stars.

The same annoyances I have of the first book are largely still in this novel. Some not so bad as the first book and some even worse since this is a sequel after all!

Biggest Pet Peeves:

-You think in the second book the girls would finally get together and try to solve who A was... but nope! For most of this book the girls are dealing with their own dramas, some serious and others petty, but largely on their own. Which is a huge frustration for me because if there was one thing the Tv show got correct is that it got the girls immediately investigating who A was instead of just being like “oh well.”

-The girls make dumb decisions and come up with even dumber conclusions at times but I do feel like were smarter in this one.

Things I Liked/Loved:

-Girls do interact just a little more. I mean just a hair more than the first book but at this rate I’ll take what I can get.

-The ending shocked me as it was different than the TV show.

PROS:

1.) An upgrade compared to the first novel.

CONS:

1.) Poorly Written
2.) Cringy Dialogue between characters
3.) Cringy Thoughts by characters
4.) Girls barely spend time together and don’t tell each other secrets that Ali made them keep. It’s like come on! It’s time to spill!

Overall I enjoyed this one a lot more and I am willing to read the third one.

description

What was that ending????

I'm so confused.

Ok so book two. Ali's body has been found, the funeral held, and A has made the first move. While the four girls still aren't what you would call friends, they are finding themselves thrown back together as they try to figure out just who A is.

I will say, all of these girls are kind of horrible and self-centered. They just really aren't likable characters. That being said, they are LOADS better than the horrible parents that plague this series. Racism, favoritism, bullying, fat shaming, plain ignoring their child. It's just horrible.

We get to learn more about each girl here and just what secrets they were keeping with Ali. I am liking getting to know them, even if I don't really like them (does that make sense lol). I'm still comparing it to the tv show which hopefully that will change as the books continue because they are so different.

Aria and Spencer are so far my faves. I feel bad for Aria and I like Spencer's adult attitude (even though she makes stupid ass mistakes). I can't stand Emily - she's very whiny and wishy washy. And Hanna is just a straight bitch who likes to rub her misery off on other people because she's unhappy.

Anyway, after that crazy ending, I'm off to the next one.

So I have already read the “Pretty Little Liars” series including the add-on ones. I don’t really like Shepard’s writing, but her storylines are pure gold. I am going to do the reviews of the “Pretty Little Liars” books a little different. I plan to ask questions as I read the series again and see when (or if) the question is answered. I’ll hide them with the spoiler code so you’ll have the choice to spoil it for yourself! I’m doing way too much for this series, but hey, I like to analysis things and I’m a little nuts. So here we go:

filler moments and a little action.

people always complain that pll has a lot of filler episodes, and i agree, but i also don't care because those episodes have a lot of romance and i love some romance.
but when it comes to the books...i don't care about anything besides A. the girls are ok (Hannah is currently my favorite), but i just hate their dramas, is just boring.

will i continue to listen to these books?
Well, that's a secret i don't even know.

Remember I said I liked Toby? I don't anymore, actually. He was sweet and cute but I now know what he did and... No.

When I think of Aria, Emily Spencer and Hanna I see 4 train wrecks. They are all derailing so fast it's making my head spin.

The story again begins. All the girls are scared to death wondering who A is and what if A reveals their secrets to everyone?

Girls have to deal with their own personal problems along with fearing that their haunted past may be coming back to them. Some secrets are revealed, many are still enclosed.

The second book of the series is also very good but still I love the first book more.

i just skimmed through the book, it's the second book in the series, i haven't read the first one and have no idea why i picked this book in the first place.
i just don't care about the characters, i already have enough things to worry about. no actually, i think this is the only book where i couldn't empathize with the characters one bit, i don't care who "A" is, you got yourselves in the trouble now deal with it 🤷🏻‍♀️
partly, i think the fact that i haven't read the first book is why i don't understand the characters well? so rating this book would not be fair.

anyways, have a good day :)

In Depth

Best Part:
Melissa screwing over Spencer, neither deserve Wren.
Worst Part:
Overall Feels: This 2nd book flowed so well from book 1, which is always a good thing. The ladies were trying to be friends at first, but of course that didn't last! I just love reading about other people getting screwed over for some reason and these books deliver. I love how even the minor character's like Mona and Kate are getting in on the screwing over action!

Conculsion
