The Italian Cars of the Geneva Motor Show

Ferrari, Lamborghini, and nearly all of their Italian friends show up in force at the Geneva Motor Show. They're usually the most expensive and sexiest cars there, or at any auto show, for that matter. But there's something about European shows – especially Geneva – that really gets the Mediterranean blood pumping, the horsepower flowing and well, let's just look at the cars. There are a lot of red ones.

Of course, we're leading off with a Ferrari. The 812 Superfast is the successor to the F12 Berlinetta and packs 789 horsepower from its naturally aspirated V12. It's pure Ferrari. The styling is redone from the F12, with more contours and concave surfaces. There are more vents, and those dual taillights set our hearts aflutter. The Ferrari LaFerrari was kind of a trite name. Superfast? We're cool with it.

    Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce

The historic Alfa Romeo brand showed the gorgeous Giulietta hatch – restyled and in Veloce trim – in Geneva. It featured a 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, Brembo brakes, 18-inch wheels, and leather and Alcantara seats. Alfa even borrowed from corporate cousin Mopar for a carbon spoiler and door mirror caps.

The tiny Mito hatch was also shown in Veloce guise, and with the razor-sharp front fascia, peering headlights, and those signature Alfa wheels (measuring 18 inches), we're almost hoping for high gas prices to force Alfa to bring this to the United States. This Mito also has a 170-hp engine, fabric and Alcantara seats, and popping red brake calipers.

    Lamborghini Huracan Performante

Did they or didn't they set the Nurburgring record? How legit was it? Well, we know for sure that the Lamborghini Huracan Performante was on display in Geneva, regardless of what it did at the 'Ring. How about that Dukes of Hazzard orange paint!

Seriously though, this is one mean Lambo, checking in at 88 pounds lighter than the Huracan in normal spec and packing a whopping 640 horsepower. We've driven the Huracan at the Horse Thief Mile. We can't wait to get the Performante on a track.

Maserati Gran Turismo Sport Special Edition

Maserati had a quieter show than Ferrari and Lambo. With no new product at the moment, Maserati dipped into its past and featured this Gran Turismo Sport special edition that salutes the 60th anniversary of the iconic 3500 GT, which was revealed at the 1957 Geneva show. A  Gran Cabrio Special Edition added to the celebration. A Levante SUV show car with Ermenegildo Zegna silk fabric for the interior was also on the stand.

    Italdesign Zerouno

In addition to the big-name brands, the Italian design houses and tuners got into the act in Geneva. Enter, the Zerouno. It's a mid-engine supercar with some intense Italdesign styling. Under all of that, it's a Lamborghini Huracan. They're going to build five of them, marking the debut of the Italdesign Automobili Speciali sub-brand. Note the Italian tri-color running stem to stern. We think it looks a little bit like a Decepticon.

    Italdesign Pop.Up

This is where things get a little weird. Yes, Geneva had all the vroomy Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars, but it also had some forward-looking Italian wares. Like this flying car. The Pop.Up is actually a passenger module that can attach to an electric car platform or a drone. That's pretty close to a flying car, and it looks pretty cool.

    Fittipaldi EF7

So technically, Fittipaldi Motors lists a Miami address. And HWA in Germany is doing the engineering. But the design? That's all Italy's own Pininfarina. It's an aggressive look with huge air and aero treatments. You could shave with that front splitter. The EF7 was easily one of the most-talked about cars in Geneva. Packing a 600-hp V8, a carbon-fiber monocoque and body, and Pininfarina's styling bravado, it's easy to see why.

Hybrid Kinetic Group H600 by Pininfarina

The H600 is another international effort, with the EV tech coming from Hong Kong company Hybrid Kinetic Group, which has plans to build the car. Pininfarina is supplying more than its artistic talents, as it will help produce the H600 as part of a $68 million deal announced in March, also adding validation and engineering muscle. In contrast to the racy EF7, the H600 is a quietly elegant sedan that would not look out of place in any market.

    Pagani Huayra Roadster

Horacio Pagani is actually from Argentina, but his company is based near Modena, Italy. With that established, let's talk about the car. It follows in the treadmarks of the Huayra coupe, but the open-air model has different body panels, as Pagani himself explained. The car has 764 hp, is dripping in carbon fiber, and it costs $2.4 million. All 100 are sold out. Sorry.
