Quality Coffee Roasters Control

No compromise.

image of coffee quality controlQuality checks and balances are of course essential to an excellent final product.  All the coffee roasted at Regal Coffee is subject to a series of scientific quality controls before leaving our premises, including:

  • Moisture content analysis: The moisture content of green coffee is an indication of how well the coffee has been processed.  Correctly processed coffee will have a moisture content of 9-12% – coffees below this level will roast too quickly and lack depth of flavour, and coffees over 12% will roast too slowly, as well as risk being musty.
  • Double cleaning and screening: Coffee is produced in countries all over the world, travelling many thousands of kilometres to get to the United Kingdom.  Unfortunately, that may lead to foreign objects finding their way into the bags, from small rocks to large pieces of metal or plastic.  At Regal Coffee, we have a four stage de-stoning and cleaning process – ensuring none of these objects end up in our roaster or your grinder.
  • Roast colour analysis: Roast colour is checked by hand providing accurate information about the degree and consistency of roast as every very blend has unique colour target, and by checking and recording the reading of every roast we are able to ensure absolute accuracy.

HARVEST & PICKING

Quality assured from the very beginning.

image of harvest and pickingAttention to detail and expertise at the farm level is the first step in ensuring a premium cup of coffee. Coffee is an extraordinarily complex crop to grow, requiring knowledge that takes years, or even generations, to master. Flavour profiles are impacted by a range of environmental factors, including altitude, rainfall, soil type and nutrients and other factors outside the farmer’s control, requiring them to plant the right species of coffee to maintain both a high yield and excellent cup quality. The coffee must then be picked at exactly the right time, as under or over ripe fruit have a dramatic detrimental impact on cup quality. Coffee is still largely picked by hand, ensuring only the ripe cherries are selected. The other fruit is picked later in the season, ensuring a consistent crop. After the coffee is picked, it must then be meticulously processed, removing the fruit from around the bean. How well this stage is completed can make or break a crop, with defects in processing rendering the product virtually undrinkable.
