Many life changes can force people to part with cherished classics or daily drivers: moving to Manhattan, for example, or having 150 years of student loans to pay off, or simply raising offspring. Other times, even boring things like parking or insurance costs can combine to create an insurmountable expense for classic car owners in big cities: We know more than a few city dwellers who couldn't justify keeping a car they've had for ages because they could no longer afford it.

The owner of this VW Golf GTI decided to give up his classic hatch: The new house lacked garage space, and he didn't want it to suffer under the gray and rainy English weather. While it sounds like he could have found a way to keep it, we can understand that keeping something at a remote garage is just not the same thing -- and it could only defer a sale in the long term.

Have you ever had to part with a car (or truck) due to a move or other life changes, even when you knew you could probably keep it? Give us your story in the comments below.

Jay Ramey grew up around very strange European cars, and instead of seeking out something reliable and comfortable for his own personal use he has been drawn to the more adventurous side of the dependability spectrum. Despite being followed around by French cars for the past decade, he has somehow been able to avoid Citroën ownership, judging them too commonplace, and is currently looking at cars from the former Czechoslovakia. Jay has been with Autoweek since 2013.
