Five long years after they were first released, Chief Keef's breakout singles "I Don't Like" and "Love Sosa" have finally been certified platinum. The two tracks earned their RIAA certification March 15 and 22, respectively.

Keef earning these two new certifications is a remarkable accomplishment, but you have to wonder how much sooner he might have received them if song streams had been counted toward record sales at the height of his popularity in 2012. The RIAA only began counting streams toward album sales in late 2014.

Speaking with The New York Times back in December, Apple Music's Larry Jackson, who at one point worked at Interscope—the label Keef was signed to at the time—touched on the moment he thought R&B and hip-hop began to surge on streaming platforms. During the interview, he noted that Keef had been getting plenty of streams before Apple Music was even in the game.

"The shift happened before our arrival in the marketplace. It was something that I’d definitely taken note of when I was working as an A&R at Interscope, with artists like Chief Keef, who was doing so well [streaming]," he explained.

Five years detached from his mainstream peak, Keef is still making excellent records, and his influence on artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti shouldn't be downplayed.
