Violet Carrington is a freshman at Elton Hall and it's at the University's casino night when she sees the most amazing man. Their eyes meet and sparks fly but next time they meet it turns out 'Hercules' as she's called him is actually Professor David Berneli.
Any relationship between them could result in him losing his job and her being expelled but how long can they fight the attraction they feel?
Violet tries to distract herself with Trent who seems a far more suitable option for her, with him she can walk round campus and not have to hide, plus there's Officer Finn who is obviously attracted to her.
I believe this is this author's first book and if so then she's off to a good start.
This is a first in series and as such it's busy, there's a lot of character introductions and some interesting characters but......
Despite all the characters this moved a little too slowly at times and it seemed strange that Violet suddenly finds herself wanted by David, Trent and Finn.
I understand the dilemma of a student/professor relationship and I know Violet was attracted to Trent but I found it disconcerting that Violet was kissing and making out with David one minute and then Trent the next, it just didn't sit well with me.
Like I said this is a first in series, it's not a cliffhanger but there is unanswered questions, particularly what was going on with Trent?

I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley.

Our story begins with Violet, a freshman at Elton Hall who meets an attractive and alluring man at a casino who turns out to be her literature Professor. They have an undeniable attraction but anything between them is strictly forbidden. As boundaries are crossed and Violet’s life is threatened will she be able to contain this secret affair?

This is definitely not the first student/professor romance novel I have read and unfortunately this isn’t one I particularly enjoyed or would recommend.

The writing was a bit awkward and formal for university students and I didn’t really connect with Violet. I didn’t like how she was always acting with false bravado and the description on Goodreads doesn’t allude to any kind of love triangle but Violet hooks up with two guys and also has another one interested in her. That in itself isn’t too much of an issue but I wish the author had focused more on Violet and David’s relationship. There are too many side characters. The issues with Violet’s roommate came out of left field and probably could have been taken out entirely from the novel.

David was okay. He was British and hot and that is about it. He and Violet didn’t seem to have enough meaningful conversations for me to take their romance too seriously. They also had stupid miscommunications that had me seriously questioning Violet and her maturity. I was also slightly annoyed that David texted like a 14 year old boy. This isn’t 2002 anymore...who abbreviates you to ‘u’ anymore besides young teens? Especially someone in their early 30s who didn’t even grow up with a cellphone? Maybe people still do this but it is so unattractive to me.

And on the topic of age... I thought the scene after they slept together and he made her dinner was weird. He is making her pasta with red sauce and he tells her he has ‘soft drinks’ in the fridge. It made me instantly aware that she is under 21 and that their affair is a bit odd. Red wine would have been more appropriate with dinner but...she can’t even legally drink. Forbidden romances can be sexy or intriguing but Violet acted a bit too childish at times and it really made me wonder what David sees in her besides her looks.

Another issue I had was when writers pass time quickly by using lines like ‘the week was so busy and flew by...’ or ‘before we knew it, I checked the clock and it was after one in the morning...’ etc. It is okay every once in a while but I notice the author used it quite a bit, and I didn’t like it. Especially when David and Violet first spent real time together and instead of actually telling the reader how they bonded she just said they ‘talked until one in the morning’ and we are supposed to gather that they now feel closer.

The ending was very abrupt and again, instead of explaining, the author just summed up with rest of the entire semester and Violet's relationship with David in one very short sentence. It definitely didn’t have a HEA ending.

As the author’s debut novel I am being very generous with three stars because although my review is quite critical the book did keep my attention (even though it took me almost 2 months to finish), and it wasn’t the worse student/professor novel I have ever picked up. I think some of the writing issues are things that the author can improve on over time so I wouldn’t write her off entirely (haha puns.)

Wow... this book just had everything!
When I first started reading this book, I wasn't sure on how the storyline would work, Violet began seeing someone else, who seemed quite perfect... until he wasn't. By the end of the book I just wanted to dive in and give her a cuddle, I'm glad she got her happy ending, for now. it was amazing to see that the author had managed to place all of these separate events into the storyline and still managed to make it flow effortlessly.
during this book, you also start to get frustrated with the "sidekick" characters, you can see their relationship wanting to go deeper, but unfortunately it can't, I can't wait until the next book in the series to find out if she gets her happy ending

Re-read? No

“Then walk away. If you really don’t feel this spark between us, then walk out the door,” he whispered softly in a tone that reached an unknown part of me. No other man had even come close to finding this part.

For the most part I actually enjoyed this book. I liked the plot and the writing but there were two things that knocked it down to three stars for me.

This first was that at the beginning, Violet acted like a fresh faced freshman (which she absolutely was), excited about all the things that college had to offer her. She was even rightfully gunshot and nervous about classes and some of the other things going on in school. Then out of the blue a switch is flipped and she’s suddenly a boy crazy, sexually experienced, siren. It was just odd and I started to find her annoying. However, I could overlook that if it wasn’t for problem number two.

The ending was a complete anti-climatic, unsatisfying, mess. It doesn’t even really END. They both just decide to give their relationship a try and that she’s going to go home to England with him over break. That’s it. I saw it was a series and figured that there must be more but the next book focuses on her friends and their love triangle. I’m disappointed and not interested enough to read that book for any clues as to what happens between Violet and David.

Like I said, not horrible. I was just left feeling unsatisfied.

First Semester was definitely an interesting read for me. I was instantly pulled in when Violet meets a downright sexy stranger at Casino Night, and even more intrigued when I found out that he was her very sexy and very off-limits Professor.

Violet is a freshman at Elton Hall and she throws herself into college life by joining EET with Annabelle, the shy girl from across the hall. While Violet manages to capture the attention of Professor Berneli she knows it's forbidden and something she shouldn't pursue. I wasn't sure where that was going to go when Violet meets Tyler and Officer Finn. I loved her personality and how Ms. Fischer made her come across as a real college student.

David Berneli is a very passionate English Professor teaching at Elton for the semester while he works on his second textbook. Even though he try's very hard to stay away from Violet there's something about her that he can't help but be drawn to.

When David and Violet are together the chemistry is fantastic. I won't lie, there were times I was left craving more..but Ms. Fischer definitely delivers. She's also thrown in quite a few twists that I can't go into without spoiling the story for you.

If you want to know what happens with Violet, David, Tyler, and Officer Finn then I highly suggest picking up this book!! I can't wait to see what she brings in book 2!

Wow. This book was a wild ride I never wanted to end! I went into it expecting some steamy romance and some hot guys (which it totally had!) but I also got so much more than a usual weekend read. There was sex, forbidden love, mystery, suspense, and a few twists and turns that I did NOT see coming!
Let me tell you, you get drawn in by the sultry accent and sculpted pecs, but you stay for the serious drama that wasn't overdone. In fact, it got a bit into current events, bringing up some topics that might be important for a lot of women, particularly those going into college.
So, if you want a bit of action with your romance and a storyline that extends beyond the usual "heaving bosoms", look no further.
BTW, book two is on my future bookshelf now. There are a few things I really hope are carried on in the series! Can't wait<3

Okay. Where to start with this one? Well, let's start at the beginning. This was a hot, spicy read that kept me turning the pages one after the next. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen with Violet and Annabelle, Tyler and Officer Finn. Then, there's Hercules, aka David. Man, he's a hottie, isn't he? Well, yes. Yes he is.

I love how Ms. Fischer incorporated a lot of British speaking into the dialogue with David to make him even more believable as he is from England in the story. As a lady that has a step-father that is British and a British brother-in-law and sister-in-law, I've heard them use quite a few of the words David did throughout the story, so for me, that pulled me in even more.

Violet. Well, I have no idea what to say about her. She's very likeable. She has a certain realness to her, brought forth with her lack of confidence in certain situations and how easy it is to talk herself out of things that she wants.

But, put Violet and David together, and watch the fireworks. I don't want to go into much detail as I'm not the kind of reviewer to post spoilers, but if you want a hot read that keeps you wanting to know more, just open this book and start reading. I did, and I couldn't be happier I did. Sarah Fischer is a new author to watch, for sure.

This story was a sexy, fun, absolute delight to read. Violet is a collage freshman, who meets a super sexy guy at orientation, David. The attraction was sudden, but still had that slow burn feel caused by certain intriguing complications that made me want to keep reading to see if these guys would get a happily ever after. There was no shortage of drama, suspense, and mystery. This romance has a side of kick, for those who prefer a bit of action with their love stories. There were some surprising twists. I can't go into detail without spoiling the story, but I was very happy with how the plot unfolded. I liked how real the characters felt, especially Violet and David. I really connected with Violet, and the accent on David almost broke the needle on the hotness scale. This is a definite must read for any new adult or romance fan, and I can't wait for the next book in this series.

I really enjoyed this book!! The story was well written and kept you intrigued through the twists throughout the story. The characters will captivate you. Witty, stalking, deceit and romance.
Violet and Annabelle are best friends in college and share the most intimate secrets with each other. Two college girls hearts set on guys. Good and bad.
Professor Berneli is a temporary teacher from England. He is a sweetheart trying to protect his students at all costs.
I would recommend this book!! I'm volunteering an honest review for an advance reader's copy.

I thought the author put a lot of work into the characters and detailed story-line. I enjoyed the realistic sense of the story because anyone who's been to college knows how those first few days go in a new place with new faces and friends and sometimes a romance or two. This is also my first teacher-student romance and I'm interested in reading more in the future. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I’m going to confess that New Adult and I have a rocky relationship which surfaces at the most unexpected times. On the one hand, it’s a genre that most realistically recalls the uncertainty and exhilaration of new experiences; at other times I find it too ridiculous and beyond my comprehension—possibly because I’ve moved so far beyond the games and exploration bit that some characters get narcissistically lost in.

It was admittedly hard to get into the ‘First Semester', as the first half pretty much consisted of linear, descriptive scenes of Violet’s daily life as a freshman in college. Not that I couldn’t relate, but I was waiting to get to the heart of the story where Violet and David began their forbidden relationship and somehow didn’t find myself there at all. Instead, there was an introduction to several potential love interests, several merry-go-rounds involving roommates skirmishes and classmates that proved distracting.

Somewhat too self-absorbed and judgemental, the portrayal of Violet is pretty much what I’d expect of a college-age co-ed, though I still cringed at her lack of maturity and discernment as she tried juggling hooking up with 2 guys at once without being able to make up her mind about what she really wanted. Her false bravado annoyed me, just as her flaunting the other guy she seemed interested in, right in the face of the man who wanted her. At the same time, I found it a little hard to believe that David would have propositioned Violet so boldly despite knowing college code, and that things between them could hardly be more than just a crush and infatuation that intensified because of their dalliances were forbidden. Consequently, I found them somewhat juvenile, even with a vindictive side when both parties pussy-footed around each other because they couldn’t work out their attraction. The HFN ending was suitably appropriate, though not as satisfying as I thought it would be.

‘First Semester’ unfortunately, wasn’t a book I thought I’d liked, as much as I wish I could. I found myself marginally interested in Jason/Annabelle’s story but I’d also love to see a more focused development on them rather than be inserted as bystander in the whirl of college activities that I felt takes the impact of the romance away.

Violet is a freshman at Elton Hall where she sees the most enigmatic men she has ever met. Unluckily for her, he turned out to be her Literature Professor.

Any relationship between them is FORBIDDEN. They knew it. I knew it. The whole University knew it. But how long can they fight the attraction?

For the life of me, I couldn't get into this book.

First off, this was a forbidden romance, right? Student/Professor? Well, it didn't give me that vibe. Then, Violet started seeing Trent...

"I was hooking up with my professor and setting up a date with a frat guy, I wasn't sure when my life got this exciting or If I could even handle it."

and I was like...

And don't make me star talking about the Finn thing. Oh hell, no.

Violet was annoying. I didn't like her, so I couldn't understand why every man in campus loves her, LOL. Professor David, the hero of this story was non-existent, what pissed me off because I usually love the heroes but not this time. He was barely ok.

The story seems to fall extremely flat and a bit drawn-out to me, which made me feel like it wasn't going anywhere.

So this book sadly fell victim to my No, just NO books.

Overall, It was an ok book, just not for me.

WOW what an amazing start for Sarah, this was a debut novel for Sarah Fischer and 1st in a series. First Semester gives us a look at the life of a Freshman who is excited to fit into her new life style. This book has some very well written characters and a very good story line. It will have you seeing the nerves a new student faces but also so you see the fun and laughable moments as well. It does have some twist in it that will keep you on your toes. You will fill like you are a part of this story from the beginning and it flows very well also.
Violet Carrington is a college freshman with a lot going on. She is trying to make new friends and fit in as well. She meets Annebelle and makes friends with her right off but she keeps this friendship very discrete and does not share everything with her at the beginning. They attend the University’s casino night where she is enjoying showing off her poker skills when she meets “Hercules” and feels the instant chemistry with him. He is hot and sexy and she would love to get to know him more but never gets his name. She can’t seem to forget about him and wonders who he is. She soon finds out and he turns out to be her new professor visiting from Britain, Professor David Benereli. Any relationship between them would be forbidden because it could result in her being kicked out of school and him losing his job and being sent back home. How long will they be able to fight the connection and will the age difference make a difference to him?
Then throw in the crazy roommate and her boyfriend, Trent who Violet tries to have a normal relationship with and Officer Fin and you have a typical Freshman school year. There is a lot of great relationships and friendships built in this book and I think you will find it very enjoyable. I feel in love and could not but it down, I can’t wait to see what is next and she how this hot Student/Teacher relationship advances.
This is a MUST read so One-Click It NOW!!!!

***ARC received in exchange of an honest opinion***

First of all, it was mostly hard to read this book. At first I wasn't feeling it, then I realized it'd be a student-teacher romance and it picked my interest, but then it fell flat again. It didn't really feel like a "forbidden" romance and I had a hard time connecting with the characters and the story.

The storytelling didn't flow and mostly the characters just annoyed me, specially Violet. A lot ofthing started happeningatthe sametime and then they weren't given continuity and then later the story got back to them. It was a bit messy for me.

And even though this is a story with plenty ways in the plotline to be angsty, I missed the angst that, for me, would have made this a good one.

Professor hotness

This gave a realism of what relationships between and professor and student realism. We see the suspicion and insecurities instead of the love emotions. They don't know what to do with these forbidden emotions and I liked that. There was no instant happiness and solution there was just progress. I liked it

Violet is ready for college. She’s excited for all the possibilities and freedoms that come with being a college student away from home for the first time. She meets a hot guy at the welcome casino night. He matches her in poker and wit. The chemistry is off the charts the whole time. When she leaves she can’t get him off her mind.

Insert the shy girl across the hall, who Violet makes fast friends with. The one thing I really loved about this book was the realism. Violet and Annabelle take their time with trust. I mean they’re friends right away, but it’s not like how in some people are made to act like they know everything about each other right off the bat. Both girls had their secrets.
The girls are navigating confusing waters together and become closer with each chapter. I love their friendship and their friendship with Tyler!

So, back to what I was saying about casino-night-guy… It turns out the hot guy from casino night is totally off limits, and Violet has to keep her feelings to herself—it could be a dangerous game to play with his career and her future on the line.
There are SO many layers to this book, which gives it a really real feel. From the creep, to the asshole, to the cute friend who has an asshole girlfriend. It has ups and downs; it talks about real issues young adults are facing. Once I got started I couldn’t put it down. It literally has it all. Elton Hall is a captivating journey into the pains of college and a lesson in passion. It's a book that will make you laugh, and tackles hard topics.
And somehow manages to be steaming HOT too. A must read!!!

As this is the first in this series, we meet so many characters. Some are endearing, some are HOT, some are sweet and some you may just want to throat punch!
This is an enjoyable read, based around Elton Hall. Friendships are formed, relationships are tested, and boundaries pushed as everyone navigates their way in Elton Hall. Throw in some sexy sex scenes, taboo relationships and intrigue and you have the makings of a good book.
Looking forward to reading more from this author!!

Sarah Fischer brings a fresh voice to student/teacher romance. You can tell she writes from the heart, and it's a good debut novel with just the right amount of intrigue, passion, and heartache.

Violet is a new college freshman who catches the eye of an amazingly hot guy while playing poker at Casino Night on campus. David, a visiting professor spending the year at Elton Hall, is intrigued by the smart and sassy student but knows he shouldn't cross the line into a taboo relationship with her...there's too much at stake for them both.

The book started off a little slow for me, but gained momentum. There's a lot of detail packed into those first chapters, and we're also introduced to several peripheral characters throughout. It was a little too much to keep track of at times, with extra details that didn't add to the story (in my opinion). Despite that, it was a good first effort and I look forward to reading more from the author.

I am somewhat of a prude, so I admit parts of this book made me blush. The story is geared toward college students, which means it will be unintentionally popular with middle and high school girls. While the romance is hot, it is also responsible.

In this time of "Me too", "First Semester" would be excellent to prompt discussions concerning violence toward women, sexual harassment, and assault. Although this would be a good discussion to have at the high school level, I doubt that the explicit sex scenes would be appropriate. However, this would be perfect for an adult book club.

Author Sarah Fischer brings very real problems for young women to light. This book could provide opportunities to discuss how young women can be empowered to handle situations like those Violet (main character) finds herself in. Plus it's a bit titillating to boot.

Elton Hall follows freshman Violet as she navigates her first year at university. She begins by encountering an unsurpassed hottie at Casino Night...who turns out to be her professor. Awkward.

Violet and David (the professor) understandably try to ignore their attraction, but it doesn't go so well. Violet is also admired by a few other boys on campus and tries to date them in an attempt to distract herself from what she feels for David. Well, that only leads to further complications, but such a fun, fun read.

One of the best aspects of this book is the author's meticulous attention to detail - David is British, and he speaks like a Brit. College/dorm life is accurately portrayed, and Violet's friendship with shy Annabelle is spot on. A must read!

I am a new adult fan and I thought this was a great book! I am such a fan of Violet because of how real she seemed. She didn't just jump into bed with the guy but there was a build up with the relationship. She was indecisive but I liked that about her. It was like she was really conflicted and tryin to figure out what she wanted.

As for David. I think he was a good book boyfriend. I liked that he had an accent but I especially liked that he wasn't just some big macho man. He had soul, swagger, and some real sex appeal. When he and Violet were in the same room, the pages practically burned up with it. I will definitely be checking out what else this author has.

My college age niece read this first and suggested I buy it. I assumed it would be a general romance, but was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the plot. There were twists and turns, hot sex, good friendship, and a bit of a mystery that adds an element of danger to the book. It also addressed several hot topics that were brought about in believable and understandable ways. I don't want to give away too much, but I'm glad the author brought up the importance of reporting crime as well as the fact that victims are never at fault for the actions of their attackers. It was also surprising to see that this was the first book by the author and I'm looking forward to the next installment.
