This Map Shows Which States Protect LGBT People From Discrimination

If this were a just world, the entire map above would be colored purple. But only 19 states and DC prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Three others protect sexual orientation alone. And the rest don’t have any statewide protections at all, although cities within some of those states are picking up the slack with local laws.

The map comes from Reuters, and if you mouse over each state, you can see a brief explanation. Much of the data comes from the Movement Advancement Project, which tracks state and local laws that affect LGBT people. If you’d like to see more about how your state fares, head over to their website for more maps and charts that can help you decide on your next vacation—or cross-country move.
